DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This Public Utility Enforcement Officer position is part of the uniformed PUC Motor Carrier Enforcement Division and primarily covers Erie and Warren counties. This officer has the authority to stop and inspect all commercial motor vehicles to ensure they are in safe operating condition. This includes conducting inspections of both drivers and vehicles, completing safety audits, issuing citations and complaints when necessary, testifying at court hearings, and conducting investigations of consumer and agency-initiated complaints of motor carriers. Utilize and grow your knowledge of pertinent Public Utility statutes and regulations, the Pennsylvania Vehicle Code, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation Vehicle Equipment and Inspection Manual, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, and the Hazardous Material Regulations to keep our highways safe.

Your work will ensure that that new motor carriers have the knowledge they need regarding the regulations and safety management practices in place. You may also have the opportunity to work side by side and in conjunction with state and local police with the goal of preventing and reducing the number injuries and fatalities involving commercial motor vehicles. Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 60-minute lunch.
  • The counties of patrol are ERIE and WARREN.
  • This is a home-headquartered position. You must reside in Erie or Warren County or be willing to relocate within six months of employment.
  • Additional travel may be required, including travel to the headquarters office in Pittsburgh.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Four years of enforcement experience with a governmental regulatory agency's laws, rules and regulations pertaining to motor vehicles; or
  • Four years of professional police experience; or
  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with major course work in police sciences or law enforcement; or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree.

Special Requirement:

  • You must possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Condition of Employment:

  • You must successfully complete the required training and safety courses within six months of employment.
