Responsibilities

This position is responsible for providing IT support in planning and design of computer-based information systems to support the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Institute (GFDI) and Department of Scientific Computing (DSC).

In this role, you will be responsible for:

  • Providing desktop management for GFDI Associates, faculty, students, and staff.
  • Controlling and managing computer usage policies for GFDI-owned hardware and software.
  • Editing and adding content to the GFDI website.
  • Maintaining and fabricating research instruments for fluid flow quantification and visualization in the GFDI laboratory. This includes managing PIV systems with laser sheet and camera imaging, dye tracing, IR imaging, acoustic direct flow measurement instruments, and wave gauge systems.
  • Maintaining GFDI shop equipment, including computer-operated milling machines, large and small lathes, drill presses, and assorted hand and power tools.
  • Serving as the GFDI Information Security Manager (ISM), maintaining the unit's information security program in accordance with policies and guidelines set by the Information Security Policy Office (ISPO). Reporting suspected or confirmed computer and privacy incidents to the ISPO. Serving as the liaison with the ISPO, ensuring that all staff receive information security and privacy training, coordinated with the Unit Privacy Coordinator. Representing GFDI in IT-related committee meetings and workshops.
  • Building, maintaining, and troubleshooting GFDI-owned as well as DSC-owned desktop computers and laptops.
  • Maintaining and troubleshooting the Katello/Foreman and Puppet deployment systems for the DSC.
  • Building and maintaining desktop systems, with a focus on Ubuntu, Windows, and RHEL platforms for the DSC.
  • Troubleshooting network issues involving LDAP, DNS, DHCP, and TFTP, and print server and multifunction printers for the DSC.
  • Researching hardware and software options and solutions for emerging problems as needed.
  • Writing and revising documentation on the usage of computer resources.
  • Overseeing and training technical staff, OPS, and students engaged in programming or analytic tasks.
  • Building and maintaining data processing applications, including those for real-time laboratory and numerical experiments, using languages and tools like C++, Matlab, and Fortran.
  • Overseeing annual inventory, tagging new equipment as necessary, and providing required paperwork to Property Accounting for GFDI and assisting with IT inventory management for the DSC.
Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; or a high school diploma or equivalent and four years of experience. (Note: post high-school education and/or experience may substitute at a comparable rate.)
