Position Summary:

Ensures the safety and security of all tribal members by enforcing and upholding the tribal constitution, customs, and laws.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Protects the property and lives of community members by patrolling assigned areas and addressing any suspicious persons and/or establishments.
  • Conducts investigations in traffic, burglary or reported incidents as required.
  • Responds to all reported incidents and makes arrests as required by applicable laws.
  • Conducts routine checks of local businesses, residences and government agencies.
  • Maintains positive relations with community members and agencies by educating and informing on crime prevention and related issues.
  • Transports violators to and from court, rehabilitation sites or jail facilities. Serves court papers, subpoenas, or tribal documents as required.
  • Maintains appropriate documentation on incidences as required by policies and procedures. Generates reports as needed.
  • Prosecutes cases during trial in tribal or magistrate courts.
  • Administers Breath Alcohol Content tests on probation clients as required by courts.
  • Communicates with local, state, regional and outside agencies and assists as needed.
  • Assists with dispatching calls and training of new law enforcement officers.
  • Contributes to a team effort by accomplished related results as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Must be certified as a police officer and pass physical efficiency battery test
  • Able to define problems collect data, establish facts and draw conclusions
  • Strong analytical, interpersonal, negotiating and problem-solving skills
  • Certified in first aid and CPR
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Able to handle multiple tasks, meet deadlines and work under pressure
  • Knowledge of all tribal, state and federal laws
  • Able to handle fire arms

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma or GED; some college helpful. Valid NM driver's license and clean driving record required.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, and sit. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold; extreme heat; risk of electrical shock; and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. This position is required to remain on-call 24 hours per day.
