Engineering Technician III

Engineering

Department of Natural Resources

Hourly Wage: $25.66/Regular/Full-Time


The incumbent supports the Engineering Program staff in completing a variety of planning, design, surveying, maintenance, and construction-related tasks, which may include operating heavy equipment. Must be detail-oriented and maintain a clean and organized warehouse.


Examples of Work Performed:

Perform general civil engineering maintenance activities such as: In-person field reviews to evaluate roads, striping, signs, and guardrail conditions for maintenance and repair. Maintenance of water metering devices. Perform water measurements at well or instream locations. Maintenance of ditches and culverts for proper water flow; including catch basins. Maintenance of roadway rights-or-way, such as assisting in hand/chemical weeding and tree and brush removal.

Effectively work with various Yakama Nation departments, Wapato Irrigation Project staff, and contractors and/or consultants.

Collects and compiles data for Engineering studies and inventory databases.

Creates, reads, and interprets drawings, maps, and technical manuals.

Calculates and verifies quantities, cost estimates, and progress payments.

Review contractor submittals and prepare draft correspondence letters.

Serves as a crew member, crew leader, and/or inspector.

Inspect project site to ensure quality and compliance with design specifications and write reports.

Report to the Project Engineer any design or construction issues as well as any administrative and/or policy or procedural issues.

Organize and assist with the management of records for the project, i.e., progress, notes, drawings, etc.

Coordinate with consultant or contractor to provide updated engineering plans.

Attend project meetings with Engineering staff, consultants, and/or contractors.

Assist in surveying utilizing GPS equipment.

Maintains labor, vehicle, and equipment use records.

Organizes, and maintains equipment, tools, and supplies.

Ensures all work vehicles and equipment receive yearly maintenance, and any other repairs necessary.

Document daily work and compile monthly reports.

Operate heavy equipment like excavators, bulldozers, front-end-loaders, tractors, and other related equipment.

Able to excavate to grade with accuracy and respond to signals and directions by staff and work in coordination with them.

Ensure and manage the equipment and machinery safely and securely.

Perform safety, maintenance, or service checks to ensure proper functioning of the equipment.

Inform and advise management of needed repairs or maintenance.

Receive warehouse or yard deliveries and check for damage and serviceability, note and report discrepancies to immediate supervisor.

Load or unload equipment and deliveries utilizing a forklift.

Organize and maintain the warehouse to ensure it is clean and organized.

Store, issue, and receive a wide assortment of supplies, materials, and equipment in the warehouse.

Other duties as assigned if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of safe and efficient construction practices.

Must possess technology skills in the operation and use of computers, including hardware and software to support the Engineering program (CAD, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook), data management, smart phones, digital cameras, and other electronic equipment as needed.


Skill in basic carpentry.

Skill in operating equipment, hand tools, and small power tools.

Skill in operating heavy equipment like excavators, bulldozers, front-end-loaders, tractors, forklifts, and other related equipment.

Ability to speak and write clearly, to exchange, convey, and receive information.

Ability to perform mathematical computations to determine slope, elevation, volume, flow, structural layout, and other engineer/surveying-related solutions.

Ability to read and interpret engineering plans, schematics, maps, and surveying records.

Ability to prepare technical reports and presentations.

Ability to work independently and efficiently, with little or no supervision on tasks as assigned.

Ability to successfully complete technical trainings and obtain certifications to enhance the Engineering program.

Ability to perform tasks indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions, requires the ability to sit, stand, crouch, climb, and walk on uneven ground, perform tasks that require physical abilities of a laborer, and occasionally lift/move items up to 75 pounds.

Ability to maintain excellent time and attendance to meet program goals and objectives and meet scheduled deadlines.


Minimum Requirements:

Associate degree in engineering or related field; or an equivalent combination of education (advanced mathematics, basic engineering design, and construction theory) and experience that provides knowledge, skills, and abilities sufficient to successfully perform essential duties.

Heavy equipment operation.

Forklift certification or ability to obtain within probationary period.

Must possess and maintain Traffic Control Flagger certification or have the ability to obtain the certification within 6 months of employment.

Required to pass a pre-employment drug test.

Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License with the ability to obtain a Yakama Nation Driving Permit.

Enrolled Yakama Preference, but all qualified applicants are encouraged to apply.


Preferred Requirements:

CDL A, preferred, or able to obtain within the probationary period.
