JOB PURPOSE

A qualified Mechanical Engineering Technician for Seaboard Foods must be able to perform timely repairs while maintaining safety awareness and provide accurate feedback to his/her supervisor about the equipment in his/her assigned work area.

RESPONSIBILITIES & TASKS:

  • Have a thorough knowledge of department and related components including location of switches, valves, and controls throughout department.
  • Must have basic knowledge and understanding of tool usage.
  • Must be able to perform minor maintenance such as: bearing replacement, chain setting, oil/lube maintenance and minor trouble shooting skills.
  • Must be able to work overhead, on a ladder or scaffolding in high areas.
  • Must be able to stoop or bend to work below knee level.
  • Must take daily instructions from supervisor and carry out assignments and duties with little or no supervision.
  • Must be able to use precision instruments such as: torque wrenches, dial indicator, calipers and micrometers as the job requires.
  • Must be able to dismantle, identify, repair, and put back into service all types of machinery in department in a timely manner.
  • Perform other duties as required.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Must take and pass the Mechanical Reasoning Test.
  • Must properly utilize safety equipment such as a hard hat, harness, earplugs, steel toed boots, hairnet or beard cover, gloves, safety glasses, and welding equipment as needed.
  • Understand that the hours and days of work are established as needed by operations and at the discretion of management and while general as shown below, may be changed (increased or decreased) by management as required.
  • The maintenance department works four days on and three days off. The workday consists of a twelve-hour shift.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: the physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the job the employee will stand through the entire shift. The employee will regularly use repetitious hand and arm motion and grasping action. Must have the ability to use and maintain a sharp edge on a knife and electric wizard knife. The employee will regularly reach and twist with the upper body; grasp, pull/push and/or lift to 50lbs. Must occasionally bend and lift from the floor to the waist and from the chest over the head. Employees must have the ability to travel 300 feet unassisted. May need to use straight ladders or steps to get to workplace.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that the employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The environment is hot, humid, and odorous, with temperatures above 100F on the harvest side. The environment is cold and wet, with temperatures ranging from 28-48F on the cut/conversion. There is frequent exposure to hog blood. The noise level is loud.
