JOB SUMMARY:

 

To perform medical laboratory tests, procedures, experiments, and analysis, to provide data for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease.  To coordinate the daily laboratory operation of a quality control, quality assurance and peer review.    

 

Regulatory Requirements:


    • Qualifications for this position are described in the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA ’88) under Subpart M: 'Personnel for Nonwaived Testing,' 493.1351 - 493.1495. A complete description of the requirement is located at http://wwwn.cdc.gov/clia/R
    • CPR certification (or eligible for certification within the first 12 months of employment).
    • Eligible for MLT certification within the first 12 months of employment.
    • (Any exceptions to these qualification requirements will be reviewed on an individual basis by the hospital administrator, pathologist, and the laboratory manager).


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:


  1. Performs the duties described for the Medical Technologist and rotates in all sections of the laboratory on a “fill in” basis.
  2. Is responsible for monitoring test analysis and specimen examinations to ensure that acceptable levels of performance are obtained by weekly and monthly review of quality control and maintenance records for each section of the laboratory.
  3. Assure that all remedial action has been taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory’s quality control parameters or in proficiency testing.
  4. Report to the Lab Manager on a regular basis and when problems arise concerning operation of an instrument or performance of the testing personnel.
  5. Check supplies weekly and submits an order to Materiel Management. Informs the Laboratory Manager of supplies not on the Laboratory vendor list or any other issues.
  6. Package inserts are reviewed and updates to procedure as needed. Review with Laboratory Manager changes or issues.
  7. Works to prepare inter-laboratory Quality Control data and send information to appropriate agency with monthly peer reviews.
  8. Prepare all “Lot to Lot” roll-overs with reviews and range setting for all areas in the laboratory.
  9. Ensure Calibrations, Linearity, and Correlations are preformed timely with proper filing of documents.
  10. Quarterly verifications and calibrations.
  11. Oversees the laboratory proficiency testing program and reviews all reports and remedial action with Manager.
  12. Helps prepare for JCAHO and other inspections.
  13. Assists in the orientation of personnel.
  14. Assist in the evaluation of new instruments.

 

Other Responsibilities:


  1. Completes required orientation and competencies as directed by facility.
  2. Follows facility and OSHA safety rules and procedures while on assignment.
  3. Respects cultural and religious practices of patients
  4. Upholds HIPAA regulations.
  5. Punctual and dependent for assigned/confirmed shifts.
  6. Performs other duties as assigned.
  7. Adheres to dress code, appearance is neat and clean.
  8. Wears identification while on duty according to policy.
  9. Adheres to the Attendance Policy.
  10. Attends 75% of departmental meetings.
  11. Supports the hospital and promotes a positive attitude.
  12. Reports any violation or appearance of violation of the policies and procedures and/or laws and regulations addressed in the Compliance Plan and the hospital code of Conduct to the Compliance Officer, to a member of Key Management, or to the Department Manager.


Must be willing to receive all required vaccinations (i.e., flu shot, etc.). All new employees working must be fully vaccinated as a condition of employment (unless the new hire has requested and received an exemption).
