Position Summary

First and foremost the role of the perioperative RN is to serve as a patient advocate. The perioperative RN plans, coordinates, delivers and evaluates nursing care for patients during operative or invasive procedures. The perioperative RN works collaboratively with other perioperative professionals to meet patient needs. Using clinical knowledge, judgment, and clinical-reasoning skills based on the nursing process, the perioperative RN plans and implements nursing care to address the physical, psychological, and spiritual responses of the patient having an operative or other invasive procedure.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current RN licensure in the state of Oregon
  • Obtain BLS certification within 3 months of hire and maintain as current
  • Operating room experience required
  • Scrub experience preferred
  • Current perioperative nursing certificate preferred

Essential Job Functions

  • Follows and completes all assignments as given by the charge nurse.
  • Assists in and assesses Operating Room readiness, table positioning, supplies and supply availability and equipment readiness for a variety of procedures.
  • Develops the patient's plan of care and monitors treatment in the operative environment. This includes practice of aseptic technique and maintenance of sterile fields as well as correction of breaks in technique for any of the team members.
  • Manages patient safety by implementing operative policy and procedures including patient identification, site verification, positioning and counting of sponges, instruments and sharps. Takes action to correct deficiencies.
  • Holds self, physicians and other team members accountable for safe patient practices and environment.
  • Documents accurately and appropriately, following regulatory and hospital requirements.
  • Participates in the responsible management of health care resources.
  • Assumes responsibility for clinical competency and professional development.
  • Other duties as assigned.
