Design Engineer

Facility: Trenton Plants

General Description
Responsible for the development of aluminum wheels and wheel-related products for military and civilian applications by applying design and analysis skills. Ability to communicate effectively and enjoy interacting with others. Manage all aspects of project development from concept design, costing through delivery to the customer. Create and maintain strategic partnerships with customers, suppliers, and industry contacts. Create and maintain detailed project documentation and support revisions as required throughout the product development lifecycle.

Specific Duties
• Follow all applicable environmental, health and safety rules and procedures and immediately report all dangerous situations, near-misses, and injuries.
• Define customer technical requirements and understand potential competition.
• Conceptualize new projects and make concept proposals based on current product catalog and available materials.
• Generate cost models for new proposals and current products.
• Support sales and marketing in technical expertise: technical feasibility and general wheel and runflat engineering issues.
• Build and develop strategic partnerships with key customers, component suppliers, and testing and industry contacts.
• Manage all aspects of wheel design projects including creating models, detailed drawings, APQP project documentation and schedule while adhering to Hutchinson’s engineering standards and procedures.
• Apply CAD and FEA tools to engineer solutions in a fast-paced environment.
• Coordinate multiple projects simultaneously and provide regular and accurate project status.
• Assess and correlate design simulation and engineering calculations with physical wheel testing.
• Work with Engineers and other personnel to resolve current issues or implement new design concepts or manufacturing processes.
• Providing training or instruction when introducing a new design or process.
• Prepare technical reports to be used by Engineering, Management, or Sales personnel.

Qualifications
• Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) or higher.
• Experience with solid modeling, drawing creation and structural FEA (preferably CREO and ANSYS).
• Must be well organized.
• Strong communication skills.
• Some travel may be required.
• Ability to effectively interface with other departments.
• Capable of using Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.).
• Knowledge of mechanical properties of materials, including stress and strain analysis.
• Knowledge of manufacturing methods including forging, casting, and CNC machining.
• Knowledge of fatigue failure analysis, testing, predictive design, and correlating theoretical simulation to actual test results.
• Knowledge of vehicle design and customer or industry standards (SAE, ASME, T&RA, and/or ETRTO) is beneficial.
• Experience with data acquisition modules, acceleration sensors, and ultrasonic stress measurement is beneficial.
• Second language (i.e., German, French) is beneficial.
• Military experience/background/knowledge is beneficial.

Personal Protective Equipment
• Safety Glasses conforming to ANSI Z87.1 or higher (required for entering mfg. area)
• Gloves for general protection (as needed). Note: Gloves are never to be used around any rotating equipment (lathes, drums, windups, etc.)
• Ear Protection (Noise Reduction Rating 33 dB - as needed)
• Safety Shoes conforming to ASTM F2413-05 PT Class 75 Protective Toe (when working in the Test Lab)

The employee frequently is required to sit; walk, talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, for viewing a computer terminal distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception vision for driving and ability to adjust focus.
This position is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions
