Job Title: Radio Dispatcher Certified

Department: Public Safety/Police Department

Reports To: Chief of Police

FLSA Status: Nonexempt

SUMMARY Handles all emergency and non-emergency communication by radio and/or telephone relative to law enforcement and public safety.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

1. Receive and handle all incoming calls for Police, Fire services and 911 services.

2. Radio dispatch the appropriate emergency responder to emergency and

Non-emergency situations.

3. Receive and act on any request or information obtained from all

emergency and non-emergency situations.

4. Monitor, receive and dispatch, calls to the appropriate emergency units

from the 911 system, i.e. fire, ambulance, police.

5. Prepare and submit written reports, memos, etc. as directed or required.

6. Enter and update all dispatched calls into the computer.

7. Regular attendance for the scheduled work shifts is required.

QUALIFICATIONS Must be able to think and act clearly in stressful situations and emergencies. Must be able to speak clearly and distinctly and possess good listening skills. Must have ability to reduce rambling and disconnected messages from callers into concise, accurate messages to emergency responders. Must have or be able to obtain a working knowledge of radio/dispatch procedures and basic computer system. Should have the ability to type and enter data via computer keyboard in timely fashion. Must have completed the twelfth school grade or any equivalent combination of experience and/or training. Must be able to pass a background investigation and be free of felony criminal record. Must attain a Level II ACIC/NCIC certification within 12 months of date of employment. This is a shift work position for a 24/7 operation.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read a limited number of two- and three-syllable words and to recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers. Ability to print and speak simple sentences.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one- or two-step instructions. Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables.
