About the Role:

The Fiber Optics Communication Superintendent is responsible for the development, implementation, installation, and testing of fiber optic networks, inclusive of selecting appropriate types of fiber, calculating loss budgets, and determining optimal routing and placement of fiber optic cables. The Superintendent is responsible for the performance of detailed site surveys to assess the feasibility of proposed fiber optic network installations, including physical terrain assessments and identification of potential obstacles, as well as the creation and interpretation of detailed network maps and schematics using GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software, ensuring accurate representation of fiber routes and equipment locations.

Essential Functions

  • Coordinate with construction teams and contractors during the installation phase, providing technical guidance and ensuring adherence to engineering specifications and safety standards
  • Conduct thorough testing and commissioning of newly installed fiber optic systems, including OTDR (Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer) testing, power meter measurements, and end-to-end system performance verification
  • Perform detailed site surveys to assess the feasibility of proposed fiber optic network installations, including physical terrain assessments and identification of potential obstacles
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues related to fiber optic networks, including signal degradation, connectivity problems, and equipment failures, employing advanced diagnostic tools and techniques.
  • Research and evaluate emerging fiber optic technologies and materials, such as new types of optical fiber and advanced optical amplification techniques, for potential application in future network development projects
  • Develop and provide weekly commissioning status report to the Testing & Commissioning Manager
  • Conduct weekly coordination meetings with the Testing & Commissioning Manager, Electrical Superintendent and Field Commissioning Superintendent
  • Participate, as needed, in project specific meetings such as kick-off meetings, sub-contractor meetings, and weekly progress and schedule update meetings
  • Ensure, through mentoring, training, and auditing, that Field Commissioning Superintendents, Electrical superintendents, and QA/QC representatives understand and apply the standards set forth in the Client project specific contract documentation, MYRE and OEM equipment supplier commissioning requirements
  • Coordinate with the Commissioning Operations Manager, Testing and Commissioning Manager and project manager as needed to collect required documentation for all major project milestones (MC, SC, EBF, SYNCH, COD, & project closeout)
  • Ensure successful tests, including practice testing and the review and approve all commissioning test documents
  • Coordinate with the Testing and Commissioning Manager to build and complete the turnover documentation
  • Other duties as assigned

About You:

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Mechanical, Civil or Electric Engineering or related discipline; combination of relevant education and experience considered in lieu of degree
  • Bachelor's degree in fiber optic communications is preferred
  • Electrical, telecommunications, or computer technology post-secondary education is preferred
  • Valid driver’s license
  • High school diploma or GED
  • 3 years of supervisory experience is preferred
  • Minimum 4 years of experience with commissioning activities on utility scale fossil fuel, and/or solar facilities, including SCADA/DAS system troubleshooting
  • Certifications such as the BICSI Registered Telecommunications Project Manager (RTPM), Fiber Optic Technician (CFOT) by the Fiber Optic Association, and Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) are beneficial for Fiber Engineers
  • Experience with DCS, SCADA, fiber optic, CAT6, PLC, and MODBUS communications.
  • Training certifications that can be accomplished within 90 days of employment:
  • OSHA 30
  • CPR/BLS/First Aid
  • NFPA 70E

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Industry certification and training is beneficial
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Deep understanding of electronic and optical systems are essential.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  •  Excellent professional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of NETA, NERC, IEEE, NFPA70E, and industry prudent workmanship and test requirements.
  • Working knowledge of safety protocols, renewables/electric utility P&C systems (relaying, communication, networking, RTU, SCADA, CT, PT), and planned outage management processes.
  • General knowledge of AC and DC electrical systems and electrical safety for systems up to 1500VDC and 230KV AC

  • Salary - $88,400 - $110,700 / year.
    • Commensurate with experience, paid weekly. Posted salary ranges are made in good faith. MYR Group reserves the right to adjust ranges depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate. ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​
