ATHLETIC TRAINER

Job Description

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:

  • This position reports to the Head Athletic Trainer and Dean of Athletics
  • Clinical instruction function reports to the Exercise Science Program Director

  • EBE and/or Work Study Students

FLSA STATUS:

  • Administrative exempt, full-time, at-will position.
  • It is expected this position will require at least 40 hours/week to satisfactorily complete the job requirements.

PURPOSE: This position, under general supervision, independently performs and is responsible for (1) Assisting the Head Athletic Trainer in managing an Athletic Training Room that services all intercollegiate sports and student-athletes; (2) Assisting in the process of developing and implementing standard operating procedures, schedules and appropriate documentation of injuries; (3) Recognize, evaluate and treat student-athlete injuries; (4) Educate coaches, student-athletes, and parents through injury treatment, rehab, and resolution; (5) Leading the College’s primary insurance verification process, and submitting injury claim forms for both primary and secondary insurance policies; (6) Clinical instruction of Exercise Science students working towards a career in Athletic Training.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Assists the Athletic Training Staff in administering all non-academic phases of the Athletic Training facility in support of Bethany’s mission statement and the Department of Athletics goals and philosophies and in compliance with Bethany College regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Clear understanding of the NAIA philosophy and the role of athletics in a private, church-related liberal arts setting.
  • Maintains knowledge of departmental activities, sports schedules, and procedures.
  • Assist with developing and maintaining all Athletic Training policies and procedures, including concussion policy, lightning policy, and extreme heat/cold policies in conjunction with the NATA position statements and NAIA/KCAC recommendations.
  • Assists the athletic training staff in coordinating and administering the intercollegiate athletic training program under the auspices of the team physician, which includes referrals, fitness testing, screening, and therapeutic treatment.
  • Assists the Athletic Training Staff with all athletic injuries within the intercollegiate athletics and administers therapeutic treatment or coordinates medical care for the student-athletes.
  • Maintain rehabilitative, protective, or injury prevention devices such as taping, bandaging, or bracing and properly fitting protective equipment.
  • Maintain accurate medical documentation on student-athletes.
  • Assist with the College’s primary insurance verification process and submit injury claim forms for primary and secondary insurance policies.
  • Assist with the established Bethany College Drug Education and Drug Testing Policy for Student-Athletes program. Provide suggestions to improve processes and stay current with the latest information.
  • Assists with supervising the Athletic Training facilities and modalities.
  • Coordinate and maintain the Athletic Training inventory.
  • Instructs and/or assists in clinical education and/or supervision of work-study and/or EBE students.
  • Participates in staff meetings, providing input and suggestions to improve areas of operation.
  • Regular and satisfactory attendance and punctuality.
  • Actively seek and complete professional development and licensing requirements.

Job Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degrees in athletic training from an accredited four-year college or university.
  • Preferred one to two years of related experience and/or training.
  • BOC certification: State of Kansas Athletic Trainer Licensure or eligible to obtain.
  • Current CPR certification; American Red Cross Professional Rescuer or equivalent.
  • Evidence of commitment to student-athletes.
  • Knowledge of NAIA regulations related to athletic training/intercollegiate athletics.
  • Excellent computer skills.
  • Ability to function professionally in highly stressful situations.
  • Ability to provide accurate information on an impromptu basis.
  • Ability to work evening/weekend hours and travel as needed.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and a strong commitment to customer service.
  • Good communication skills, organized, and able to perform multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to communicate effectively to a variety of audiences, including students, parents, faculty, staff, alumni, administration, and the community-at-large
  • Ability to handle multiple projects/assignments concurrently and be very results oriented.
  • Highly motivated and works well both independently and in a team environment.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

  • Master’s Degree
  • One to Three years of athletic training experience at the collegiate level

COMPUTER COMPETENCIES:

  • Functional knowledge with Microsoft Windows
  • Functional knowledge with Microsoft Office
  • Basic personal computer operation
  • Willingness to adapt to a changing technology environment, i.e. updates, security, and new versions
  • Ability to use multiple Internet browsers
  • Competent in email and document management

PHYSICAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

· Moderate physical activity. It requires handling average-weight objects up to 50 pounds, standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day, stooping, bending, kneeling, reaching, and pulling on a frequent basis, and proper lifting techniques.

· Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand, and finger dexterity, including the ability to grasp, and visual acuity to perform athletic training techniques, use a keyboard, operate equipment, and read technical information.

WORKING CONDITIONS: The work environment may involve exposure to physical risks, such as operating dangerous equipment or working with chemicals; it also includes exposure to biological hazards, bacteria, and communicable diseases. Work outside involves considerable exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises. Frequent conference-wide travel; frequent prolonged and irregular hours; frequent evening/weekend hours; travel as needed. Work performed indoors generally has ambient room temperatures, lighting, and traditional office equipment, as found in a typical office environment.
