Reports To: Assistant Branch Manager

Position Status: Full-time, Non-exempt


Job Summary: A Universal Banker is a customer service-oriented team member who handles account opening and maintenance, phone calls and walk-ins, and occasionally helps on the teller line. They must be able to use and troubleshoot computer banking systems, maintain working knowledge of our products and services, work with other departments to handle and solve customer issues, and prioritize customer service above all.

Primary Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide exceptional customer service above all.
  • Assist new and existing customers by handling a variety of consumer and business accounts, including installment loans, checking & savings accounts, certificates of deposit, individual retirement accounts, safe deposit boxes, and other retail banking services.
    • Service and retain these customers by opening new accounts, cross-selling services, resolving issues, etc.
    • Obtain and maintain a working knowledge of all products and services sold by American Bank.
    • Perform account maintenance, prepare necessary documents. 
    • Transmit wires and ACH payments, issue debit cards, set up and troubleshoot online banking.
    • Follow up to ensure customers are satisfied.
  • Review overdrawn accounts daily and contact customers to resolve by paying or returning checks.
  • Answer telephones.
    • Research, troubleshoot, and resolve any customer, account, and online banking issues.
  • Satisfactorily complete all required compliance bank training and comply with all regulations which apply within the scope of the position.
  • Represent American Bank in a courteous, professional manner.
  • Assist in setting individual goals and objectives for this position.
  • Assist in the opening and/or closing of the branch.






Secondary Responsibilities:

  • Assist on teller line as needed:
  • Receive checks and cash for deposit to savings and checking accounts, verify deposit amounts, examine checks for endorsement and negotiability, and enter transactions into bank records via an on-line teller terminal.
  • Cash checks and pay money from savings and checking accounts upon verification of signatures and customer account balances. Inspect all checks, bonds, money orders, savings withdrawals, etc. to determine their negotiability.
  • Accept loan payments of all types ensuring that payments equal the amount due and that all late charges, if applicable, are collected.
  • Provide bank products for customers such as money orders, cashier checks, statement copies, photocopies, stop payments, and gift cards.
  • Provide information for customers regarding accounts and products upon proper verification.
  • Balance cash and control negotiable items.
  • Combination and key control.
  • Open and process night depository, ATM and /or cash dispensers.
  • Assist with internal audits.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as directed.


Performance Expectations:

  • Portray a professional image and provide prompt quality service to all customers.
  • Proficient and effective operation of the telephone system, bank computer system (Microsoft Word & Excel, Jack Henry, and e-mail), calculator, photocopier, and scanner.
  • Suggest all products ethically, based upon the needs of the customer and within the parameters established by American Bank.
  • Develop new business through calling programs and by participating in at least one outside service organization.
  • Meet the goals and objectives set by management.
  • Balance cash within the designated guidelines.
  • Adherence to bank policies and procedures


Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Interpersonal skills to represent American Bank in a positive manner.
  • Critical sensory abilities: seeing, hearing/listening, touching, and speaking.
  • Mental effort requirements: reading, writing, basic arithmetic, mathematics, visualizing conclusions, analyzing data, searching for solutions, and conducting research.
  • Physical dexterity requirements: operating general office equipment such as telephone, computer, coin counter, check encoder, currency counter, cash advance machine, teller capture scanner, document imaging scanner, calculator, typewriter, photocopier, and postage machine.
  • Become registered on the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System & Registry (NMLS).


Working Conditions:

  • Work environment is indoors in a clean atmosphere with normal noise levels.
  • Physical requirements: standing for long periods when providing customer service, sitting, walking and must be able to lift and carry 30 lbs. waist high and 20 lbs. shoulder high.
  • Ability to work under time constraints and pressure is required.
  • Exposure to a potentially hazardous condition – robbery. Receives detailed instructions and procedures to be followed to minimize the risk.
  • Monday through Friday, 8-hour shift with one hour lunch between the hours of 7:30 AM and 6:00 PM.
