Job Summary

The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) performs a variety of specimen processing and clerical tasks for the laboratory service in support of the Dena'ina Wellness Center Services, (DWC) and Kenaitze Indian Tribe, (KIT). The MLT will provide phlebotomy services for the laboratory and process specimens for testing and/or referral to the appropriate reference laboratory. The MLT will perform testing offered on the DWC Laboratory testing menu under supervision of the Laboratory Director and the Medical Laboratory Technologists. The MLT will maintain, operate, and troubleshoot analytical equipment, perform quality control, and appropriately address issues. The MLT will provide weekend coverage as needed.

Essential Functions

  • Provides clerical support for laboratory staff including processing incoming and outgoing lab reports, making copies, maintaining and organizing filing system, and complete end of month statistical reports.
  • Performs patient specimen testing. Evaluate and ensure specimens are suitable for testing and analysis. Notifies supervisor of rejected specimens following policies and procedures.
  • Processes specimens into the laboratory for all sections of the laboratory including the send-out specimens. Properly documents the laboratory specimens into the laboratory information system or Electronic Health Record (EHR). Enters and verifies results.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in newborn/infant heel-sticks; child and adult finger-sticks; newborn, infant, child and adult venipuncture.
  • Performs a full range of clinical laboratory tests and examinations in all sections of the laboratory under the guidance of the Technologist or Lead Tech and/or designee.
  • Performs scheduled maintenance on all instruments, performing quality control and notifies Supervisor and/or designee of any problems and/or corrective actions taken.
  • Monitors, maintains, orders and stocks laboratory supplies.

Lifting Requirements

Qualifications

Education

  • An Associate's degree in Medical Technology or related field or a combination of education and experience may substitute for a degree.

Experience

  • One (1) year clinical laboratory experience.

License/Certification

  • Medical Laboratory Technician (ASCP), American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB), Clinical Laboratory Scientist (NCA) or equivalent certification (as determined by a national credential certification agency) or eligible for registration or certification or obtain within three (3) months of hire.
  • Must have a valid Alaska Driver's License and remain insurable under the Tribe's policy.

Special Skills

  • Proficient skills in using Laboratory Information Systems
  • Knowledge and understanding of the developmental stages of patients throughout the continuum of life as they relate to the collection of specimens.
  • Knowledge and skills in Electronic Health Records (EHR)
  • Knowledge and understanding of HIPPA and 42 CFR.
  • Computer skills using Microsoft office suite.
  • Conducts business in a service-oriented manner that is attentive, pleasant, respectful and kind when dealing with un'ina, visitors, co-workers and others.

  • Knowledge and experience working with cultural diversities.
