Midland University, a private, faith based, liberal arts university in Fremont, Nebraska (just outside of Metro Omaha), is seeking a dynamic and proven leader to serve as a Residence Life Coordinator (RLC). This is a full-time appointment with start-date to be determined.

This is a 12 month, live-in, hourly position from 8AM to 4:30PM that requires approximately 40 hours per work week with additional evening and weekend hours possible. Additional benefits include an apartment with paid utilities and a meal plan when dining services are in operation.

Job Description:

As a member of the Residence Life staff, the RLC is responsible for creating a safe, inclusive, and transformative residential learning experience for undergraduate students and managing day-to-day operations of several residence halls. The RLC will actively strive to provide a true community experience within the hall which is conducive to the individual student growth and achievement. The RLC will also fulfill other duties as assigned. The RLC identifies at-risk students, and forms partnerships and communicates with faculty and staff to provide a rich and engaging college experience. Key functions also include student staff selection, training, supervision and evaluation of approximately 12 student staff members, student conduct, and policy enforcement.

Duties and Responsibilities

Being an RLC is a demanding and challenging journey that requires flexibility, patience, and passion. In order to sustain oneself and be effective in the role, an RLC must continually and actively pursue personal well-being through a variety of sources.

Administrative Responsibilities:

In order to effectively manage all that is required of an RLC, it is essential to be diligent and thorough with the expected administrative functions. This will service the Residence Life team and the institution by providing accurate and timely information as well as ensuring efficient and effective programs. It will also ultimately serve students by providing them the best services available.

  • Keeping accurate hall rosters and reporting census data
  • Assist in the coordination of the housing selection process, room changes, and other Residence Life procedures
  • Oversee the administrative duties associated with opening and closing of the hall, providing accurate reports, planning and controlling budget expenditures, and maintaining a clean and orderly physical environment
  • Provide professional staff coverage in the residence hall emergency response system, rotating through both weeknight and weekend shifts
  • The RLC is responsible for supervising the student staff in all facets of their positions and conducts regular one on one meetings with them for feedback and ongoing training of their direct reports. The RLC is also expected to execute fall and spring semester training interventions both at the hall and system-wide level and conduct regularly scheduled written evaluations of their student staff members.
  • The RLC liaises with the Director of Student and Resident Services to refer conduct cases, generate notifications and other conduct hearing-related paperwork and to ensure timely adjudication of policy violation hearings.
  • The RLC will advise student staff on appropriate procedures and/or will directly liaise with University Officials and/or on-site emergency response personnel to direct both staff and residents during crisis situations. Finally, the RLC is responsible for notifying the appropriate parties within Residence Life when there are emergency issues associated with students or the residence hall facilities that require additional intervention or follow-up.

Professional Expectations:

  • An RLC is a professional employee of the university, and must be set apart from the students accordingly so that the roles are not confused and the RLC can most effectively carry out the essential functions of the position.
  • Operate a professional office, including regularly scheduled and posted office hours
  • Participate in the planning and implementation of the ongoing RA staff.
  • Meet on a regular basis with the Director of Student and Resident Services
  • Attend weekly staff meetings
  • Show respect and inclusivity to students and colleagues
  • Ongoing professional engagement with the field of Student Affairs

Responsibility to Residents:

The RLC ultimately sets the tone of the environment in the residence halls, and is expected to foster a positive community by being involved and visible in the community and investing in the residents.

  • Provide support to students who are living unhealthy lifestyles or violating community standards
  • Attend university and hall events on a regular basis
  • Make knowing resident's names an important priority
  • Build and maintain caring relationships with residents

Co-Curricular/Educational Expectations:

  • Life outside of the classroom is critical for the growth, development, and educational experience of students. Therefore, the RLC is considered to be an educator, implementing and facilitating intentional learning inside the residence halls through educational programs.
  • Oversee residence hall programs with student staff
  • Develop, implement, and oversee interventions aimed at supporting all students' academic and personal success

Facility Management:

It is important to offer a living environment that fosters appropriate student learning and development through the regular diligent maintenance of the residence hall.

  • Oversee facility by regularly evaluating facility maintenance and cleanliness, reporting issues, and following up with the Director of Student and Resident Services and Maintenance/Facilities as necessary

Student Life/Involvement:

Fulfill community building and leadership development duties as assigned. Typically, each RLC works in one Student Organization to foster community and leadership development (i.e.; Intramurals, Greek Life, Student Activities, Parent Relations, etc.)

  • Address campus issues as a leader by developing good rapport and involvement with students, staff, faculty, and coaches
  • During the academic year assume leadership and responsibilities for assigned student organization(s)
