Youth Tobacco Prevention Coordinator

Job Summary

The Youth Tobacco Prevention (YTP) Coordinator shall manage the State of Alaska Tobacco Prevention Coalition Community-Based grant. This position shall coordinate and implement tobacco prevention activities within Gulf Coast region, including the Kenai Peninsula School District (KPBSD) utilizing the CDC's Best Practices for Comprehensive Tobacco Control Programs. The YTP Coordinator will coordinate with Youth Engaged in Alaskans' Health (YEAH) peer leaders in developing and implementing peer-based tobacco prevention curriculum in grades K-12 with targeted instructions for students in grades 3, 7, and 9 in local area schools, and in Kenaitze Indian Tribe (KIT) programs serving children and adolescents.

Essential Functions

  • Manage and implement the Tobacco Prevention and Control Community-Based Grant
  • Engage champions (school nurse, teacher, counselor, etc.) from schools within KPBSD to support YEAH peer leaders in tobacco prevention teaching opportunities
  • Coordinate, develop and implement evidence-based tobacco prevention and control strategies and curricula to support the YEAH program and KIT programs serving children and adolescents
  • Provide youth recruitment and training annually to middle and high school students to sustain the implementation of YEAH
  • Coordinate with partnering agencies in Kenai, Soldotna, Chugachmiut, Ninilchik, Seldovia and Kodiak to oversee teen leaders in conducting outreach tobacco prevention education at community events
  • Collaborate with the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District, Mental Health and Substance Use organizations and the Kenaitze Indian Tribe staff to promote clean air, tobacco free media and support tobacco free policy advancements
  • Provide tobacco cessation services to self-referred and provider referred un'ina
  • Co-facilitate Breathe Free Gulf Coast Coalition and coordinate outreach activities
  • Promote cessation of tobacco use among youth and adults
  • Ensures compliance with Tribal, federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, Tribal policies and TERO ordinance

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Health, Public Health, or a combination of education and experience in a related field may be substituted for a degree

Experience

  • One year (1) of experience in Public Health of Human Services

Preferred

  • Knowledge and experience working with cultural diversities
  • Preferred tobacco-free use for at least one (1) year minimum

License/Certification

  • Must have a valid Alaska State driver's license and must remain insurable under the Tribe's policy, or obtain within 90 days of hire, or, with approval of the hiring manager, sign a *Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in lieu of having a driver's license to perform the required duties of the position (If Applicable)

Special Skills

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Suite, or obtain training within 90 days of hire
  • Conducts business in a service-oriented manner that is attentive, pleasant, respectful and kind when dealing with un'ina, visitors, co-workers and others
  • Ability to multi-task, work independently, and meet deadlines

This position is a Covered Position subject to all requirements of the Alaska Barrier Crimes Act (ABCA) and to the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act, (ICPA). ABCA and ICPA requirements apply and must be complied with at all times in order to remain in the position.
