Job Description

A Circle Ten Council camp health officer is a member of a team that is responsible for creating and guiding a program that provides opportunities for scouts to learn skills, earn associated merit badges, and participate in open programs which expose them to new experiences. As the Health Officer you will oversee the safety and well-being for up to 750 individual participants and over 100 staff that may be on camp at any time.


The Camp Health Officer is at least 18 years of age, lives on-site, is always on property and on call, and holds an EMT qualification as a minimum with nurses preferred given our distance to emergency medical care.

Qualifications:

  1. Willingness to be a member of the Boy Scouts of America
  2. Training and experience sufficient to meet the needs of the assigned position
  3. Must be at least 18 years of age or older
  4. Must be able to attend BSA training and obtain certification as necessary
  5. Experience working with youth and teaching in an outdoor environment a plus
  6. Scouting experience, a plus but not required.
  7. Must be a current trained and certified EMT Basic, Paramedic or higher (preferred)

Duties:

  1. Is directly responsible to the Camp Director for all Health and Safety considerations.
  2. Is responsible for the health and well-being of all youth campers, adults, and staff on camp (camp capacity approximately 750 people when at capacity)
  3. Is responsible to record all first aid and sickness in Camp Health log. (Such log is to be a bound book.)
  4. Conducts medical rechecks of all incoming Scouts and Leaders each week.
  5. Treats and reports all minor accidents daily and major accidents immediately to the Camp Director.
  6. Is responsible for the use and care of health lodge, equipment, and materials.
  7. Is responsible for all health lodge inventory and communicating lists of needed items in a timely manner.
  8. Maintains files of medical record forms for each camp period and provides for their return to Troop Leaders at close of each period.
  9. Maintains Health Lodge in a neat, clean, and orderly manner.
  10. Serves as an advisor to the counselors for First Aid and Emergency Preparedness Merit Badges.
  11. Must be able to demonstrate and teach basic first aid and be able to perform immediate C.P.R. or other lifesaving skills in the field as may be needed.
  12. Determines when medical EMS is to be contacted and is the point of contact when such services arrive on scene.
  13. Carries out such other duties as may be assigned by the Camp Director.
