SUMMARY

Performs routine maintenance, service work, and minor repairs on County vehicles, construction equipment, and other machinery utilized by the County.  Assists mechanics in performing repairs as directed.

 

Activities performed by this position are simple, repetitive, and covered by standard procedures or specific instructions. Works under the close supervision of the Lead Mechanic or a mechanic who assigns tasks and duties and inspects work for the adequacy of results. Effective performance requires the application of a basic knowledge of automotive-type equipment.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Services vehicles such as automobiles, trucks, backhoes, tractors, and loaders. Changes the oil and filters, checks and installs antifreeze, lubricates chassis, and performs preventative maintenance procedures on a routine basis.

 

  • Assures safe condition and inflation of tires and adequate fuel levels for vehicles and equipment.

 

  • Performs brake and clutch adjustments, belt adjustments and replacements, minor electrical repairs and bulb replacements, wiper replacements, muffler installations, and other light-duty mechanical repairs.

 

  • Performs preventive maintenance and vehicle safety inspections as outlined by standard procedures.

 

  • Keeps record of service to vehicles and equipment, keeps track of vehicles and equipment usage to determine service requirements.

 

  • Sweeps and picks up maintenance shop to assure clean and safe working conditions.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES 

This position has no supervisory authority.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Requires working knowledge of maintenance and servicing procedures for automotive and construction equipment. Must have skill in the use of automotive servicing equipment and tools, general mechanical aptitude, and the ability to perform manual labor under dirty and uncomfortable situations. Ability for continuous physical effort including frequent bending, walking, twisting, and lifting. Ability to follow written and oral instructions. Incumbents must have basic reading and writing skills.

  7. Attend all required safety training.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

Requires high school graduation or equivalence, and a minimum of three years' experience in maintenance, repair, and overhauling of automotive and/or construction equipment. Requires possession of or ability to obtain an Oregon Commercial Driver License and a clean driving record.

 

JOB IMPACT 

The consequences of error could result in financial loss due to faulty mechanical servicing or repair work of automotive equipment. Typical problems encountered generally revolve around vehicle and equipment operation and the ability to meet vehicle and equipment operator needs. 

 

JOB CONTACTS 

Frequent contacts are made with other County department employees and with employees of jurisdictions contracting for work regarding vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance; with suppliers and vendors for parts and materials and with outside organizations to which repair work is sent. 

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS 

Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; analyze and evaluate situations, determine solutions, and implement plans; prepare contracts and specifications. 

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS 

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute area, circumference, and volume in practical situations. 

 

REASONING ABILITIES 

Ability to compile information from reports, research, and excerpts, and utilize experience to make sound land management decisions. 

 

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES 

Use and care of tools, equipment and materials used in the mechanic trade.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS 

Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Oregon Commercial Driver License, and a clean driving record. 

 

BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION 

Those employed in this position may be subject to a pre-employment criminal background investigation. Conviction of a crime will not necessarily disqualify an individual for this classification. Pre-employment Department of Transportation (DOT) physical, and alcohol and drug testing are required, ongoing testing in accordance with DOT guidelines. 

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT 

Work is performed in a shop area; lifting, straining, and climbing is required. Incumbent works with hazardous materials such as gasoline, oil, acids, and carbon monoxide. Position is impacted by rush jobs, repetitiveness, heavy workflow, and on-call responsibility resulting in unpredictable hours.
