Job Description
The Law Office of Philip M. Gommels is a dynamic criminal defense law firm dedicated to providing exceptional legal representation to our clients. Our firm handles a wide range of criminal matters, including DWI, domestic violence, kidnapping, murder, and drug possession, with a special focus on clients suffering from severe mental illness.
We are seeking a highly motivated and bilingual Associate Attorney to join our team. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter, ready to appear in court unsupervised and handle cases from day one, with a strong commitment to providing world-class service to our clients.
Responsibilities:
- Appear in court for routine matters such as bond hearings, plea negotiations, and discovery status conferences.
- Write persuasive legal documents such as pretrial intervention request letters, grand jury packets, appellate briefs, etc.
- Handle cases with a baseline level of autonomy, in consultation with the supervising attorney.
- Conduct client interviews, convey plea offers, and advise on legal options.
- Meet with potential clients (by phone, zoom, and occasionally in-person) and convert them into paying clients.
- Participate in periodic in-house training and coaching calls and weekly team meetings.
Requirements:
- Residency in the Austin area.
- Willingness to make court appearances all over Texas, primarily within approximately 200 miles of Austin.
- At least two years of experience in criminal law (prosecution or defense).
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Commitment to professional development and continuous learning.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish a Plus
