*Please note: these positions will not be hired directly by the City, however referred to a Temporary Agency to complete the application/hiring process. All positions are summer/temporary, non-union, with no benefits.

SUMMARY: Observe and participate in GIS activities associated with data collection, georeferencing, digitization, asset management, and map creation. The focus will primarily be on GIS software, GPS technology, and data assurance. Gain experience working in a professional setting and develop an understanding of GIS technology and its applications in public service.

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

An eligible applicant may be called upon to participate in any or all of the following activities: (These examples do not include all the tasks an applicant may participate in.)

  • GIS - Assist with the development, management, and maintenance of GIS data. This potentially consists of entering/updating attributes, digitization, data entry, georeferencing, basic cartography, the creation of meta data, and other duties as assigned.
  • GPS - Utilize GPS equipment to acquire coordinates on city assets as directed.
  • Create maps or other cartographic products for use by city staff.
  • Data collection and general research as directed.
  • Attending relevant staff meetings.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Work requires physical presence at the job site to perform job duties.
  • Basic Knowledge of ESRI software, ArcGIS Pro, Map, ArcGIS Online.
  • Basic Knowledge of GIS principles.
  • Basic Knowledge of cartographic principles.
  • Ability to interact with members of the public in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Ability to perform required job duties in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Good communication skills: ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and carry out assigned job tasks.
  • Ability to maintain positive working relationships with the public and other employees.
  • Ability to work effectively under time constraints and pressure.
  • High degree of mental, visual, and manual dexterity for sustained periods of time.
  • High degree of accuracy required.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be at least 18 years old before Monday, May 8, 2023.
  • Enrolled in a GIS or related program at an accredited higher education institution OR a recent graduate from a GIS or related program.
  • Minimum GPA of 2.5 (3.0 preferred) (or diploma if recently graduated).
  • Must have a valid standard driver's license.
  • Must understand verbal and written materials and instructions; communicate effectively with the public, outside agencies, and city staff in a variety of situations.
  • Exhibit a level of proficiency using computers and general understanding of various software applications, such as Microsoft Suite products, and ESRI products.
  • Attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this position.
  • Must have an awareness of safety, understand the importance of safety, and be able to apply safety practices to the execution of all work.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly frequent movements from place to place. Bend, climb, kneel, twist, reach/extend arms, and hands above shoulder height frequently, or otherwise move in a constantly changing environment. Lifting, carrying, pulling, and pushing up to 25 pounds. Ability to sit or stand for the entire workday. Ability to type with some proficiency. Withstanding temperature extremes and inclement outdoor weather. Speech recognition and clarity, including the ability to understand the speech of customers and co-workers and the ability to speak clearly so that you can be understood by customers and co-workers. Incumbents must be able to see and hear in the normal range with or without correction.
