Job Description
Purpose
The Project Estimator is responsible for the preparation of estimates associated with any combination of the following construction areas:
- Utilities and asphalt paving for site improvements, commercial buildings, apartment and subdivision projects.
- Wastewater and water treatment centers.
- Cityscape improvement projects.
- Heavy Highway or civil construction projects, including DOT projects.
- Grade and drain.
Job Responsibilities
- Work the entire life cycle of a bid from bid invitation to finalizing bid proposal for submission to owner.
- Analyze and review construction documents: plans, addendums, and specifications.
- Identify scope of work and perform quantity takeoffs of site, civil, and underground utility work.
- Conduct project site visits and attend pre-bid site meetings during bidding process to learn scope of work and understand site conditions/restrictions.
- Solicit and review proposals from material vendors and subcontractors to ensure accuracy, evaluate responses, scope compliance, and make recommendations with regards to the overall project estimate and bid package.
- Ensure estimates are complete, well organized, and ready for review by management.
- Develop preliminary construction schedules based on the project information provided in the plans and specifications.
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously, maintain a highly organized work area, meet critical deadlines, prioritize daily activities, and multitask.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and time management skills with a strong attention to detail as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
- This position will work closely with project owners, vendors, subcontractors, project managers, and accounting.
- Works hands on and independently, as well as part of the estimating/project management team.
Education & Experience
- 5+ years of experience working for either a Site Contractor bidding on private projects, or a Highway Contractor as an estimator bidding on DOT/heavy highway projects required. Estimating projects which typically range from $100k to $50m.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Construction Management or related fields.
- Must have experience effectively managing the entire bid process from cradle to grave, including mass excavation, concrete structures, highway, bridges,pump stations, drainage systems and underground utilities.
- Working knowledge of construction assemblies and all project phases.
- Experience in identify value-engineering alternatives.
- Ability to identify constructability issues through the estimating process.
- Ability to assess site exposures/construction risks and appropriately analyze cost and reflect these in an estimate.
- Ability to produce accurate estimates from conceptual and schematic drawings.
- Ability to produce detailed, final contract estimates.
- Ability to read, write and communicate effectively.
- Must be computer literate with a working knowledge of HCSS, Oman and/or Agtek.
