Job Summary:

The Civil / LA Engineering Technician I assists the project engineer in the application of principles, methods, and techniques of engineering. The incumbent will have the opportunity to bring CAD skills and passion for design to bear, delivering state-of-the-art construction solutions to clients. The Civil / LA Engineering Technician I plays an integral role in every phase of the construction process from initial planning to project realization, utilizing the latest drafting technology to bring clients’ visions to life.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Reviews project scope and confers with project engineer concerning tasks required such as plan preparation, evaluation of field conditions, design requirements, and/or reports
  • Visits project sites to obtain and analyze topographical and/or existing conditions of structures and other details of sites
  • Prepares or directs preparation, calculations, specifications, plans, construction documents, and inspection schedules for projects
  • Coordinate structural designs and plans with architectural building plans or models as well as mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and site constraints as they affect the building
  • Uses computer equipment including engineering and design modeling software to prepare engineering and design documents
  • Review material shop drawings and conduct periodic on-site observations of work during construction to determine conformance of project to design specifications
  • Support and communicate with engineers, project managers and other supervisors throughout all stages of the drafting, design and construction process
  • Collects and gathers information or documents
  • Performs standard computations or analysis
  • Performs basic design tasks

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to write effective reports and correspondence
  • Construction document and 3D production ability
  • Interpretation and application of technical instructions
  • Skilled in the application of design concepts
  • Basic engineering knowledge along with current knowledge of industry trends, technology, codes and regulations
  • Intermediate level proficiency in Microsoft Office products
  • Proficient in AutoCAD and other discipline specific software

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university required
  • Valid Virginia driver’s license is required
  • Works under direct supervision of a licensed civil engineer or civil project manager; work is closely managed
  • Works on projects / matters of limited complexity in a support role
  • 0‐3 years of experience
