SUMMARY & MISSION STATEMENT:

Midwest Food Bank (MFB) is a $482M non-profit organization with ten divisions in the U.S. and two operations internationally. MFB operates with $76M in assets and an annual organizational operating budget of $20M to distribute over $482M in food and disaster relief boxes to 2,400 agencies.

JOB ROLE PURPOSE & SUMMARY:

The Accounting Director is responsible for overseeing all accounting and financial functions of the organization, ensuring compliance with all applicable tax and accounting regulations. The Accounting Director performs examinations and workpapers for internal and external financial audits.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Manage and oversee accounting systems, processes, controls and financial accounts for the organization.
  • Oversee grant recordkeeping, ensuring accuracy and compliance at the operational level.
  • Monitor and analyze accounting data for all divisions.
  • Lead and oversee bookkeepers at each division.
  • Manage and handle Central books, international books and intercompany transactions.
  • Develop and administer divisional and corporate budgets annually & prepare quarterly progress reports. Prepare and distribute monthly cash reserves and quarterly dashboard reports.
  • Responsible for finding, maintaining, and onboarding accounting systems.
  • Serve as payroll backup for Human Resources Director.
  • Oversee annual workman’s comp audit.
  • Work with the Inventory & Audit Director to perform routine internal audits on financial accounts and controls.
  • Work with the Inventory & Audit Director to prepare audit workpapers and reports for the annual external financial audit and 990 tax return.

  • Foster a Christ-centered culture; develop positive relationships and appreciation for volunteers, employees, partner agencies, and community and business contacts.
  • Ensure compliance with all MFB policies, procedures, and rules and with all contractual obligations, regulatory standards, and relevant laws.
  • Recruit, identify, train, and continue to nurture volunteers in support of job role.
  • Network with peers locally and nationally and across the MFB organization.
  • Execute other duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 3-years relevant work experience, 5-years desired.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field desired. Certified Public Accountant preferred.
  • Thorough understanding of accounting and GAAP principles and procedures.
  • Experience in a broad range of accounting functions for a mid-size business.
  • Performs tasks with integrity and confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated ability to create a team-oriented environment and achieving results through others.
  • Proven initiative, problem-solving, organization, and time management skills.
  • Excellent professional communications, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to use technology or learn computer skills, such as Office 365, Salesforce, SageIntacct, Egnyte.
  • Willingness to participate in training that may include development of professional skills, education on MFB’s policies and procedures, and additional training as it relates to the requirements of the position.


WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer in an office setting; periods of movement in a warehouse setting.
  • Minimal in-state and out-of-state travel as needed; infrequent evening and weekend obligations.
