The Green Mountain Habitat for Humanity (GMHFH) ReStore in Swanton is seeking a part-time Associate to support its mission of helping local families build strength, stability, and self-reliance through affordable homeownership.

Summary:

Habitat ReStore Associates provide excellent customer service and ensures customers and donors have a safe, positive, and rewarding experience. They assist in pricing, merchandising, and maintaining the sales floor; cashiering, moving, and loading donations; and other duties as assigned.


Requirements:

Primary Responsibilities:

  1. Clean, sort, price, and store donations according to the price guide and refer to the Floor Supervisor if guidance is needed.
  2. Assist in keeping the loading dock area clear and in safe condition and keep the back room free of clutter.
  3. Promptly assist donors who come to drop off donations and accept or reject them based on whether the items are in good, sellable condition.
  4. Assist in unloading scheduled pick ups alongside the truck drivers on scheduled days, as well as any other specialty pickups throughout the week.
  5. Greet any donors and customers and thank them for contributing to our cause and answer any questions they may have.
  6. Operate the Point-of-Sale cash register system and help customers complete their purchases. While on the register, always stay within sight of the register area and front door.
  7. Help to complete the daily checklist for opening and closing the store.

Secondary Responsibilities

  1. Help customers carry purchases to their vehicles.
  2. Sort clothing donations and prepare them for the sales floor.
  3. Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Specifications

Desired Education and Experience

  • Previous experience working in a retail environment.
  • High school diploma preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

  • Able to communicate well with other staff, volunteers, and any type of visitor to the ReStore.
  • Dependable and able to stick to a schedule.
  • Excellent customer service skills to respond to any questions or concerns.
  • Strong time management skills and the ability to prioritize different tasks.
  • Flexibility to switch to different tasks quickly.
  • Able to work as part of a team and complete tasks as they are assigned.
  • Light arithmetic skills to accurately work on the register.

Physical Requirements Necessary to Perform This Job

Must be able to:

  • Stand for long periods behind a register, traverse stairs, and navigate a busy sales floor.
  • Lift, pick up, carry, place down, and bring upstairs at least 25lbs.
  • squat to pick up items from the floor and perform repetitive data entry on register and pricing motions.

Tools and Equipment to be Used

Must be able to:

  • Answer a phone, use a weight lifting device such as a hand truck, operate a register system including using an iPad and giving change for purchases, write receipts for donors, and use a pricing tool to price merchandise

Work Environment

  • The physical environment requires the employee to work both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions in a variety of environments including a busy sales floor, back warehouse, and outside area. This position is exposed to a moderate amount of dust and moving vehicles including but not limited to cars, trucks, and forklifts.
