POSITION SUMMARY: The WIC dietitian assesses the eligibility and nutrition status of participants.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Accurately obtains heights & weights, and obtains hemoglobin using WIC standards.
  • Assesses nutrition status anthropometrics, and biochemical data.
  • Develops nutrition care plans and completes documentation in a timely manner.
  • Provides culturally appropriate nutritional counseling to promote risk factor resolution.
  • Ensures breastfeeding-friendly environment promoting positive attitude towards breastfeeding.
  • Maintains lesson plans and initial evaluations for nutrition education classes, interactive displays, and self-study modules.
  • Implements the Nutrition Services Plan (NSP) for the agency with input from staff
  • Manages nutrition education handouts inventory. Obtains usage approval for nutrition education materials as needed
  • Participates in development and updating of local breastfeeding policies and procedures including provision of breast pumps to WIC clients.
  • Completes quarterly reports and yearly clinic BFPC program self-monitoring form.
  • Develops orientation and ongoing training to staff on breastfeeding and support issues.
  • Supervises vendors on benefit redemption, including allowed WIC foods, vendor submission of product information and UPC/PLU numbers, and minimum stock requirements.
  • Provides training to WIC vendors.

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:

  • Educates WIC Clients and caregivers on the dangers of alcohol, tobacco and drug use.
  • Reviews charts quarterly to assure that nutrition services meet guidelines.
  • Trains and guides volunteers, students, and new employees as assigned.
  • Provides guidance on special formulas. Ensures that non-rebate formula is authorized.
  • Participates in emergency response health department efforts as needed
  • Interfaces with other Health Department activities.
  • Sanitizes clinic room and toys daily
  • Identifies local/regional breastfeeding referrals for WIC clients.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Requirements:

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Dietetics, Nutrition or related field

License(s)/Certification(s): Registration by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) of the American Dietetic Association (RD), Dietetic Licensure by the State of Kansas (LD) Valid driver’s license and good driving record. Maintain required credentialing and BLS certification provided at secondary location at Irwin Army Community Hospital.

Experience: Experience in public health nutrition and breastfeeding promotion desirable.

Skills: Strong interpersonal skills required. Experience working with diverse populations required. Ability to compose quality correspondence. Ability to ensure work is completed in an efficient and timely manner. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and to use good judgment. Excellent interpersonal skills are required in working with clients, professional organizations, fellow employees, and the public, especially when dealing with difficult people. Ability to work well under pressure, to multi-task, and to accept responsibility for independent decisions and actions taken.

Proficient in English. Bilingual English/Spanish is helpful.

Conforms to HIPAA privacy regulations specific to position. The dietitian creates and records PHI, has authority to use the following categories of PHI for treatment: patient demographics, scheduling information, and medical reports. Disclosures are allowed as necessary for treatment to providers and/or Business Associates or as required by law. May need to interact with the following departments for allowable access to PHI: Primary Care, Immunizations, Family Planning, M&I.
