MobilizeGreen seeks a conservation-minded Archaeology Technician Resource Assistant to serve 32 weeks with the Daniel Boone National Forest. The Resource Assistant (RA) will work directly under the Zone Archaeologist at the London Ranger District. The RA will work to fulfill the Heritage/Archaeology needs of the district which includes completing archaeological surveys for timber, fire, and recreation projects. The RA will gain experience in the practical applications of the National Historic Preservation Act, federal curation methods, and multi-resource collaboration. The RA will gain experience in all aspects of archaeological work from excavation/testing to report writing and curation.


The Resource Assistants Program is designed for recent graduates and new professionals to launch their natural and cultural resources careers. The RA will receive hands-on learning experience, mentorship, and coaching to complete mission-critical work while developing leadership, critical thinking, and strategic communication skills. This is a developmental program.

Term: 32 weeks, starting July 15, 2024, Full-time (40hrs/week)

 

Duty Station: London Ranger District - London, KY

Position Duties:

  • Phase I survey: shovel testing and pedestrian survey
  • Recording archaeological sites (historic and Native American)
  • Completing collections curation
  • Creating maps for survey and suitable for reports in ArcGIS Pro program and public interpretation
  • Assessing sites for the National Register of Historic Places
  • Archaeological site condition monitoring
  • Heritage Database entry


Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Archaeology
  • Practical knowledge of the basic theories and practices of archaeology in order to compile research and make recommendations to the archaeologist
  • Field experience in archaeology and/or an archaeological fieldschool
  • Ability to use the Microsoft suite if applications (i.e., Excel, Word) as well as Adobe Acrobat
  • Working knowledge of ArcGIS Pro
  • Knowledge of general artifact identification and analysis
  • Valid driver's license


Work Environment:

The RA will be required to work both in an office setting and in the sometimes-rough terrain of the Forest. Survey may take place in steep, uneven, rocky terrain that will most likely be covered in vegetation. Fieldwork may take place on very hot, humid, and sunny days. Working remotely from home or the bunkhouse is also a possibility. Driving a Forest Service truck is also required, so the ability to use 4-wheel drive on dirt or muddy roads is necessary. Hiking for long distances because of lack of access is also a possibility.
