Overview

The Managing Editor, Publications is responsible for overseeing editorial operations and quality of ACOG publications, including books, a website, and other products. Manages and coordinates the efforts of staff editors and drives development of a high-functioning, cross-trained team. Establishes and oversees editors’ management of workflows and makes recommendations for improved team and individual performance. Reviews and develops content development schedules with an eye toward greater efficiency and balance among staff. Reviews new opportunities for grant-funded work and assesses how to incorporate development into existing workflows. Supports team and organization adherence to the ACOG Style Guide.

Responsibilities

•Provide leadership, direction, and management of staff, including fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment through supervising staff, providing feedback, coaching, supporting, mentoring, performance management, and assessing training and development opportunities as appropriate.

•Establish and manage daily operations of product development, including ensuring editorial team adherence to evolving editorial policies and procedures; developing and routinely reviewing editorial schedules; planning for new volumes, content types, and products; developing translation strategies for a website; and meeting weekly with each direct report.

•Develop and execute strategic plans for new editorial opportunities, team performance improvements, and editor cross-training in consultation with department leadership.

•Analyze editors’ content strategies, schedules, and execution plans and adjust as needed to meet team goals and objectives.

•Establish editorial budget and monitor editorial expenditures.

•Represent the editorial team at internal and external meetings as needed or assign an appropriate editor to represent the team.

•Monitor and enforce office policies and procedures, including oversight of the editors’ hybrid schedules.

•Monitor concerns brought forward by committee and editorial board members, develop solutions in consultation with department leadership, and ensure agreed-upon solutions are executed by the team.

•Review and edit selected manuscripts and web content for tone, consistency, and style. Write key pieces of digital and print content as needed.

•Routinely review final page proofs to assess quality control around page proofing processes and develop or modify procedures as needed.

•Monitor use of technology on the editorial team, including oversight of team training on new software, and oversee development of related SOPs.
• Support development of future books and products and the staffing needed for them.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

 


Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in journalism, English, communications, or related field required. Master’s degree or certification in medical writing and editing preferred.
• Minimum of 7 years of editorial management required.
• Minimum of 3 years of editorial supervisory experience.
• Demonstrated knowledge of digital and print publishing and emerging publishing technologies.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, ability to creatively solve problems, and demonstrated skills in staff management and project management.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including expertise with Excel and PowerPoint. Proficiency in Wrike, InCopy, and Airtable preferred.
• Familiarity with medical terminology and plain language principles preferred.
• Candidates with proficiency in Spanish-language proofing preferred.
