GENERAL POSITION DESCRIPTION:

  • The General Manager oversees all operations of Performance Health & Fitness. This position is responsible for the creation, development, implementation, and supervision of all procedures, regulations, rules, protocols, programs, activities, promotions, guidelines, and policies. This individual is also responsible for the implementation of short and long-term strategic plans, fiscal budgets, and methodology used in the creation of business systems. This position is also responsible for the daily operation of the business including income generation activity, expense management, achieving monthly and annual goals, and employee training and supervision. This individual must be service-oriented and have a complete understanding of and adhere to all policies, procedures, rules, regulations, and licensing requirements as dictated by the company, local, state, and federal regulations.

 
RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION:
Sales & Customer Service Duties:

  • Relentlessly focused on providing the best possible experience for members, guests, vendors, and employees
  • Proactively and professionally handles member complaints and suggestions
  • Conduct membership presentations in accordance with sales process and procedures as needed
  • Serves an essential role to member retention, with prompt and thorough follow up and providing appropriate solutions for members
  • Maintains complete knowledge of Performance Health & Fitness program, service, and product offerings
  • Collaborates with Owner(s) and department heads to create, establish and enforce member policies
  • Possesses thorough knowledge of, adheres to and enforces Performance Health & Fitness policies and procedures as they apply to customers and employees
  • Participates in special events and programs sponsored by Performance Health & Fitness as required
  • Develop upcoming promotions or marketing initiatives with department heads
  • Ability to demonstrate and assist in the correct use of exercise equipment and application of exercise programs

Human Resource & Supervision Duties:

  • Trains and directly supervises the management team including all department heads, program managers, profit center managers, site managers, etc.
  • Indirectly supervises all employees of Performance Health & Fitness
  • Responsible for employee development, performance evaluations including disciplinary actions and performance improvement plans. Document outcomes of said evaluations or meetings, and whenever possible, request that attendees sign off in agreement of outcome notes
  • Conduct employee evaluations annually, or more frequently as needed
  • Set weekly, monthly, and annual goals and action plans with department heads. Continually review to ensure that resources for success are available
  • Keep employees directed and motivated  monitor individual goals and create incentives, as necessary. Supply the resources needed to make each position successful
  • Determines salaries, pay rates, and pay increases for all positions and present to Owner(s) for final approval
  • Excellent knowledge and enforcement of state laws, federal hiring practices, OSHA requirements and any other regulatory entity defined
  • Conduct recruitment of new employees
  • Oversee the hiring process of each new employee, including interviewing, technical skills assessments, and license reviews, as needed. Acquire references for managers; share interview feedback
  • Schedule and supervise the training and education of all new hires. Document the completion of training phases accordingly
  • Obtain necessary new hire paperwork and enter information into payroll software
  • Maintain updated employee personnel files and information in appropriate HR databases
  • Monitor employment issues regarding full and part time staff benefits, unemployment benefits, COBRA, health insurance, or other employee policies in question
  • Review, maintain, and implement, the Performance Health & Fitness Employee Handbook
  • Make sure respective training and mandatory staff meetings are taking place in all departments within Performance Health and Fitness
  • Collaborate with department heads and owner(s) to create, establish, and enforce employee policies
  • Delegate responsibilities to department heads, and monitors accountability accordingly
  • Complete staffing schedules one month in advance as needed and approve support staff schedules that are prepared by their respective department head
  • Lead or assist, as an observer, with all employee terminations as needed
  • Assist in preparation of payroll

Reporting/Budgeting Duties:

  • Develop and oversee the daily, monthly, and annual budgets for all aspects of Performance Health & Fitness
  • Review deposits and expenses with finance department
  • Maintain and distribute all daily, weekly, monthly, and annual reports to appropriate parties
  • Assist Owner(s) in developing and monitoring a capital improvement budget and makes recommendations for future purchases or improvements
  • Complete daily action plans to achieve weekly and monthly goals
  • Foster growth of the company through a complete understanding of financial forecasting
  • Ensure that staff scheduling keeps payroll within budget
  • Assist Owner(s) and Finance Manager in managing accounts payable system to ensure timely payment of all approved bills

Facility Duties:

  • Ensure quality maintenance and function of all equipment; schedule repairs/replacements in a timely manner
  • Present the request for purchase of equipment, new program additions, services, products, and large appliances to Owner(s) for approval
  • Conduct regular inspections to ensure cleanliness standards of facility are met; troubleshoot and address any problems with janitorial staff

General Duties:

  • Develop and manage a network of credible business contacts including, but not limited to, business development/referral opportunities, vendor/suppliers, and strategic partners
  • Create a nurturing, supportive image of the company within the business community by participating in fundraisers, charitable events, or service organizations
  • Act as a liaison between the business, members, and local community
  • Optimize the flow of communication internally and keep staff updated and abreast of all changes, policies, promotions, and events
  • Research the benefits of all new products, programs, equipment, and services prior to purchase and be active in industry publications and educational opportunities
  • Responsible for continued growth, development, and refinement of all present and future Performance Health and Fitness endeavors, ensuring that business is conducted morally, ethically, and with the utmost of professionalism
  • Maintain a professional appearance by dressing and presenting a polished image
  • Must be familiar with and able to assume any position within Performance Health and Fitness at any time
  • It may be necessary to lift/assist others in lifting heavy workloads up to 100 lb. or more  physical activity is expected
  • All other duties as assigned by the Owner(s)

 
RESPONSIBILITIES OF ALL POSITIONS:

  • Support and articulate the Performance Health & Fitness mission statement
  • Adhere to company policies and procedures
  • Ensure cleanliness of the club using all 5 senses:
  1. Sight to ensure club is neat and orderly
  2. Sound to ensure music/ sound levels are appropriate
  3. Touch to ensure floors, countertops, etc. are clean and dry
  4. Taste to ensure food & beverages in the café are up-to-standards
  5. Smell to ensure the club is fresh and odor free

  • Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have basic knowledge of Microsoft applications such as, Excel, Word, and Outlook. Customer Relation Management software and web-based software experience and knowledge is a plus.
  • Relational Skills: This position must demonstrate expertise in creating and nurturing relationships with all stakeholders. The ability to interpret and analyze situational interactions and apply an appropriate response is key. Must be able to handle diverse viewpoints and difficult situations by exercising discretion and a tactful response.

 
EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, marketing, finance, or exercise/recreation related field
  • Advanced degree in business or exercise related field of study is preferred

 
EXPERIENCE:

  • A minimum of 3 years of professional experience in a service business; fitness or recreation industry preferred
  • Must have a strong management background and leadership qualities
  • 2+ years of proven sales and revenue growth
  • Proven expertise in employee relations in a supervisory role

 
LICENSES / CERTIFICATIONS / REGISTRATIONS:

  • Current CPR/AED certification or ability to obtain in first 90 days
  • Current industry certification through nationally recognized certifying body (NASM, ACE, ACSM, or NSCA) beneficial but not required

 
ASSIGNED HOURS:

  • Full-time: 40+ hours per week required; occasional night or weekend
