Position Summary:

Orange County Council Boy Scouts of America (OCBSA) seeks a Major Gifts Officer (MGO) to play a pivotal role in securing substantial financial support from individuals, corporations, and foundations and leading the council's Fund Development team. Reporting to the Deputy Scout Executive and serving as the Development department's head, the MGO will spearhead efforts to cultivate relationships with donors to advance OCBSA's mission and programs.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement strategies to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major donors, including individuals, corporations, and foundations.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with existing major donors, ensuring their continued engagement and support.
  • Research and identify potential major donors, including individuals with the capacity to make significant philanthropic contributions.
  • Collaborate with development team members to create compelling solicitation materials, proposals, and presentations.
  • Plan and execute donor cultivation events, stewardship activities, and engagement opportunities.
  • Manage a portfolio of major donors, providing personalized attention and excellent customer service.
  • Utilize donor management software to track interactions, manage donor data, and generate reports.
  • Collaborate with the marketing and communications team to highlight major gifts and impact stories through various communication channels.
  • Stay informed about trends in philanthropy, major gifts fundraising, and best practices in donor relations.

Position Elements:

  • Responsible for individual fundraising goals, contributing to the collective Philanthropy Department fundraising efforts.
  • Participate in all aspects of the gift cycle in prospect management for the portfolio.
  • Conduct solicitation conversations and meetings, collaborating with additional staff and Executive Team where appropriate.
  • Maintain stewardship contacts with donors, demonstrating empathy, perseverance, and sensitivity to their needs.
  • Manage prospect activities for the portfolio, documenting all interactions in a timely manner.
  • Focus on securing support for organizational-wide priorities including unrestricted annual support, special projects, capital improvements, and endowment.
  • Offer prospect strategy counsel to staff as required, serving as a resource for other philanthropy staff.
  • Lead the development team and ensure that they are hitting their goals

Relationships:

Reports To: Deputy Scout Executive

Interacts With:

  • Leads the Development team
  • High-level donors, prospective donors, volunteers, and members of the Board of Directors.
  • Various departments within OCBSA include the Executive Office, Program Management, Field, and Finance.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in nonprofit management, fundraising, communications, or related field.
  • 5+ years successful experience in major gift fundraising, with proven ability to meet goals and performance objectives.
  • Proven success in securing six-figure annual gifts.
  • Strong relationship-building and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong leadership and management skills
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Proficiency in donor management software and Microsoft Office suite.
  • Commitment to the mission and values of the Boy Scouts of America.
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends, especially during select events.
