Job Description

Job Summary: The Formulation Chemist's role involves designing and creating innovative products that meet customer needs. They will work closely with the Customer Experience team and engage directly with clients to provide technical expertise throughout the product development process, from initial brief to commercialization. Additionally, they will stay updated on industry trends and regulations and suggest new formulations to address emerging market demands as part of Elevation Labs' innovation program.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Research, create, and deliver new and innovative formulas.
  2. Reverse engineer customer benchmarks and current market products.
  3. Evaluates new product briefs received from customers to source new materials and write preliminary formulas to evaluate pricing.
  4. Evaluates customer product redirects and adjusts formulas accordingly.
  5. Produces laboratory batch size formulas, divides the formulas into sample containers and labels the samples accordingly.
  6. Coordinates with Account Management to pack and ship samples to customers.
  7. Prepare Qualitative Ingredient Listings, Formula Approval Forms and Pricing Reports for sample submissions.
  8. Maintain detailed, accurate and organized formula documentation.
  9. Implement and maintain R&D processes and procedures.
  10. Partners with compounding, to ensure successful pilots and first manufactured batches.
  11. Partners with compounding to perform batch reworks as necessary. Provides technical support and maintains close involvement with customers and account managers during the product development process.
  12. Support customer requirements by thoroughly understanding all restrictions related to product briefs, brand, and timeline.
  13. Attends customer calls and meetings, as necessary.
  14. Maintains good working relationships with raw material suppliers to source new materials and obtain pricing and regulatory documentation.
  15. Attend raw material supplier meetings, as needed.
  16. Assists with innovation programs and marketing presentations, outlining ingredients and benefits of products as needed.
  17. Evaluates preliminary stability samples for pH, viscosity, color, odor, and appearance and determines test results.
  18. Performs other duties as assigned or needed for the Chemist role.

Knowledge & Skills:

Ideal Candidate Qualifications:

  • Performs work with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.

  • Extensive knowledge of raw materials.
  • Flexibility and ability to handle multiple tasks in a short amount of time.

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelors in Chemistry or related sciences required (requirement may be met with 5+ years of relevant experience).
  • 2+ years of experience with research and development of personal care and cosmetic products, preferred.
  • OTC/FDA experience preferred.
  • Sunscreen formulation experience preferred.
  • Ability to read write and speak English.

Physical and Mental Demands

  • Ability to work in manufacturing environment around heavy machinery.
  • Ability to stand or walk for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to work flexible hours and weekends as business needs require.
