About this job

The Position

Incumbent works under the direction of the Douglas County Sheriff or designee, performing security activities for the safety and security of employees, the public, and assigned facilities.

Essential Functions
  • Monitor and identify suspicious activities and breaches in security.
  • Establish and maintain effective work relationships with clients, supervisors, County employees, elected officials, attorneys, law enforcement, judges, other agencies, and the public.
  • Comply with Civil Service policies and regulations, collective bargaining agreements, County policies, department policies and laws to create a cooperative, safe, respectful and quality work environment.
  • Respond to emergencies on Civic Center and Courthouse properties (e.g. Harney Garage, Probation Building).
  • Contact 911 Dispatch to notify/request law enforcement at needed locations.
  • Monitor and operate different security systems.
  • Notify and dispatch other law enforcement staff responding to emergencies.
  • Respond appropriately to orders and instructions.
  • Monitor the National Weather Service and make appropriate announcements.
  • Assist in evacuating the building(s) during severe weather or other emergencies.
  • Maintain integrity of secured areas and keys for the facility.
  • Issue parking violation citations in public and employee parking areas and arrange for vehicle removal.
  • Test security alarms and inspect emergency equipment.
  • Inspect emergency equipment.
  • Enforce the "No Smoking" policy.
  • Provide information and respond to questions from the public and employees, within scope of expertise, in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Render immediate first aid and/or cardiopulmonary measures.
  • Notify supervisor of emergency situations, summon appropriate medical personnel and coordinate with emergency personnel.
  • Assist with emergencies (e.g. weather, fire, fire alarms, bomb, bomb threats, disturbances, mentally ill persons, other threatening or exigent situation).
  • Maintain communication (e.g. two-way radio, phone, intercom).
  • Prepare and maintain various documents and records (e.g. reports, correspondence).
  • Maintain job knowledge and skills (e.g. training, seminars, webinars, meetings, conferences, continuing education).
  • Safely operate a motor vehicle when required to travel on County business.
  • Report to work with regular, consistent attendance.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Education and Work Experience and Other Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.*
  • One (1) year of customer service experience required.*
  • Completion of Sheriff's Building Security Division Training Program within six (6) months of hire and maintained throughout employment required.
  • Completion of basic life support/cardiopulmonary resuscitation (BLS/CPR) and First Aid certification within six (6) months of hire and maintained throughout employment required.
  • Completion of Defensive Tactics Course and maintained throughout employment required.
  • Valid driver's license upon hire and maintained throughout employment required.
  • Completion of a pre-employment criminal record check, conditional offer drug screen, and physical assessment required.
  • *Equivalent combination of education and work experience may be substituted for requirements on a year-for-year basis.

  • Work is performed indoors and outdoors with exposure to inclement weather, hazards, dangerous conditions, persons or substances. Noise level is usually moderate. Work involves assigned shifts; however, schedule may vary (e.g. days, holidays, overtime/extra hours, emergency call-in) .Work may be stressful when dealing with time constraints, multiple/changing priorities and uncooperative/irate individuals.
  • Work requires physical activity including extended periods of walking, standing, frequent reaching, and occasional climbing, carrying, balancing, kneeling, crouching and bending. Incumbent must have the agility, balance and strength to maneuver over rough terrain and around various obstacles. Incumbent must also have the physical ability to protect oneself and control combative or disruptive persons using measures within the Sheriff's Office Use of Force Policy. Work also requires the ability to frequently lift and/or carry objects weighing up to 10 pounds and occasionally up to 45 pounds.
  • Required sensory abilities include vision, hearing and touch. Visual abilities, correctable to normal ranges, include close, distance, color and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Communication abilities include the ability to talk and hear within normal ranges. Incumbent must possess the hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate computers and other equipment.
