Job Description

Director of Risk Management

Indiana Packers Corporation (IPC) is a fully integrated retail, foodservice and private label producer of fresh and processed meats company. Since the start of operations in 1991, we have experienced rapid growth from a single pork processing company into a multi-plant diversified producer of fresh and processed meats, with locations throughout America's Heartland. We now have additional processing facilities in Frankfort, Indiana, Holland, Michigan, and Owensboro, Kentucky.

The Director of Risk Management leads the organization's market risk management program, working with senior leaders to co-create, execute, and evaluate strategies to mitigate commodity price risks related to both input and output with exchange traded derivative products, OTC's and other price mitigating mechanisms. This position will also be the organization's in-house expert on current market conditions in the hog/pork and grain markets including a deep understanding of market drivers, reports, and forecasted scenarios.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide routine and as needed market information and risk program updates to upper management in both formal and informal settings.
  • Develop internal risk management related policies and guidelines.
  • Communicate market situations, drivers and potential future scenarios to senior management.
  • Ensure compliance with internal policies and external regulations.
  • Effectively balance making highly influential recommendations with the ability to absorb and commence with top-down instruction regardless of its coinciding with that recommendation.
  • Provide a support role for other functions of the organization.
  • Manage key external information/consultant sources as the main point of contact on behalf of the company.
  • Develop and maintain complex excel models to effectively manage various risk programs.
  • Perform other tasks or duties as required or needed.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Economics, Agricultural Economics, Finance or any related field, Master's Degree preferred.
  • Must have experience using alternative hedging techniques to reduce risk for pork producers and/or pork commodity markets.
  • Experience in exchange traded derivative markets.
  • Experience in (or at least a demonstrable high level of understanding of) risk management practices.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Ability to calculate, organize and execute large exchange-traded futures and options reorders with high level of detail.
  • Ability to convey complex problems simply and efficiently.
  • Ability to evaluate problems skeptically and with a highly analytical and unbiased approach.
  • High proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task while being involved directly with hog procurement, grain procurement, natural gas procurement and pork sales.
  • Ability to work with a high level of autonomy and independence.
  • Financial Risk Manager's Certification or a willingness to pursue certification during employment.
  • Experience with a food or livestock production company preferred.
  • Accounting experience preferred.
  • Software development skills preferred.
