4 Undeniable Reasons Why It’s Time to Break Up with Your Job

Are you happy with your current job? Do you dread walking into work every time you’re scheduled? Have you outgrown your current position and want a greater challenge? We spend a significant amount of time working, especially if you’re in a full-time position. It’s important to remember that every job has positives and negatives, but if you’re miserable and unengaged at work most days, it’s probably time to make a change! If you find yourself in a constant debate on whether to quit your job, it might be time to seriously consider leaving.

There are several valid reasons to walk away from your current job. Some positive and happy - moving to a new city, going to school, accepting a new job offer, or switching career paths to name a few! On the other hand, there are some not-so-happy reasons to leave. 

If you’re struggling to know whether or not you should break up with your job, here are 4 undeniable reasons why it’s the time.

How do you know it’s time to move on?

1. The Work Environment is Toxic

A toxic work environment can mean many things. Poor management, hostile energy between coworkers, lack of communication, high turnover rate, a culture of discrimination and/or harassment. 

The emotional weight of a toxic work environment can quickly spread into your personal life. If you feel overwhelmed and drained, increased anxiety and stress, and/or spend more time dreading going to work than actually working, you need to cut ties. 

2. You’re Unhappy Most Days

Every job has positives and negatives. Not all days are going to be sparkles and sunshine, and that’s okay! BUT, the good days should outweigh the bad. If you find yourself miserable more days than not and dreading going into work, it’s time to make a change. 

3. You’ve Exhausted All Options to Make it Work

If you are unhappy, speak up! Don’t walk through life upset with your job without attempting to fix it. Ask to speak with your manager and let them know how you are feeling and find out what options are available. 

If you’re a server and want to move into a bartender role, let your manager know so you can come up with an action plan to make it happen. If you aren’t happy with your schedule or hours, say something! Perhaps you want to be on a career path towards management. Let your current manager know and come up with a plan for your future with the company.

Before leaving your job, exhaust all your available options to make it work. Your employer has a vested interest in keeping you happy and working! Decide why you are thinking of potentially quitting, and figure out if there are options available to you to turn the situation around.

4. Your Gut is Telling you to Quit!

If you have a strong gut feeling that it’s best to walk away and find another job, sometimes the smartest move you can make is to listen! Even if you can’t quite put your reasoning into words, following your gut instinct is always a good move.

It’s Time to Quit... Now What?

You’ve decided it’s time to break up… now what? First thing, and most importantly, don’t gossip or complain to coworkers! Rumors will spread FAST. Even though you are leaving, don’t burn bridges! Don’t speak to anyone about your plans until you discuss your plans with your manager.

That being said -- if at all possible, don’t quit on a whim without solidifying a backup plan. Start to update your resume and see what is currently available in your area (HINT: We can help!) Most jobs will still hire you knowing you need to give your current employer two weeks notice. 

Remember, you deserve to love your job. There is nothing wrong with putting yourself first and making a tough choice that will bring you fulfillment in your career and life! Don’t stick around a toxic work environment. There are plenty of available jobs waiting for you!
