How to Answer, “Why Are You a Great Match for This Role?”
In this blog post we will be talking about how to answer the interview question, “Why Are You a Great Match for This Role?”
This can be a difficult question to answer, but with some preparation, you can come up with a strong response. Think about what makes you a good fit for the job and how your skills and experience match up with what the employer is looking for. You want to make sure that your answer showcases your strengths and why you would be a valuable addition to the team.
Why is the employer asking this question?
This question is usually asked to gauge your interest in the role and determine if it is something that will motivate and excite you. This can help the interviewer decide if you would be happy working for them long term or not. The last thing any company wants is turnover from employees quitting after just six months because their job wasn't what they expected.
Another reason for the question is to determine how well prepared for the interview you are and to see if you've done any research on the company or the role before showing up for the interview. Why would a company want to hire someone who doesn't care enough about getting hired? Make sure you're ready for an interview by doing plenty of research beforehand.
Understanding why the employer is asking this question is an important step to answering it. Here is a simple formula to apply when preparing an answer to this question:
State your qualification/s and how they match the job requirements
Mention why you are interested in this company and what attracts you to it
Explain how your skills and experience will benefit the company if hired
For example, you could say:
"I have a degree in _____ and I am interested in this company because it provides innovative solutions in the _____ industry. My qualifications are a perfect match for this position as they require someone with excellent research skills and experience working with clients.”
Plan and Practice Your Answers
There are ways to plan and practice your answers and include using strong keywords while still maintaining a natural tone. First, do your research on the company and try to find specific reasons why you are interested in joining them. For example, if they have an upcoming project that aligns with your skills or goals, mention that. You can also use this question as an opportunity to brag about your qualifications. Focus on the skills listed in the job posting and how your experience matches them.
Answering this question is all about selling yourself to the employer. You want to make sure that you are coming across as confident and that you would be a great fit for the role. Focus on relevant skillsets and avoid saying things like "I need a job" or "I just want to work."
Also avoid vague statements that don’t provide any insight. For example:
"I am so excited to work here because I have always wanted to work for a company with strong values."
This is not an effective answer because it doesn't give the interviewer any insight into what you can do for them.
"I am a very creative person and I love working for this company because it does things in a unique way."
This answer may be true, but it's also vague. It doesn't tell the interviewer anything about your skills as an employee or what you can bring to their team. You should never be so general that it doesn't answer the question.
Here is an example of what to say instead:
"I am very organized, and I like to streamline processes wherever possible. Can you give me some examples of the ways you like your employees to be more efficient?"
This response demonstrates an understanding of the interviewer's needs without overstepping boundaries. It also shows off your ability to think critically about problems.
Follow-up Questions
Following the interview, be sure to ask follow-up questions. It's important to ask questions because it shows your interviewer that you're genuinely interested not only in the job but in being successful in the position. Some great questions include:
What are the requirements for advancing in this position?
How many other employees will I be working with?
What qualities make this company successful?
Could you describe the culture here at XYZ Company?
Be attentive, engaging, and courteous when answering this and other interview questions. Getting a job is tough. It takes time, work and effort to build the skills necessary for most jobs these days. So, when it comes to interviewing with an employer, you want to make sure that you are prepared ahead of time in order to get your foot in the door!
