How to hire a great security guard

Security guards are the best way to give you confidence that your business is safe and secure. Not only that, but employing a security guard can give your customers the peace of mind that you are looking out for their safety. But your premises are only as secure as your security guard is effective, so it’s important to hire a good one.

What is a security guard, exactly?

Chances are you are familiar with security guards; they are a staple of both public and private premises and are employed by businesses across all industries.

Let’s start with what security guards are not: they are not law enforcement officers. Security guards do not have legal authority, so they cannot arrest or charge anyone for any activity—criminal or otherwise. Security guards are also separate from a business’s customer service staff. So while security guards are involved in both law enforcement and customer service, they are not solely responsible for either. This is an important distinction that should be considered when hiring a security guard.

Why are they important?

Security is an essential part of every business. Whether it’s preventing theft from a retail store or ensuring that only authorized personnel enter secure private premises, security guards are responsible for maintaining safety. Without a security guard, the security and safety of the business become a responsibility for all staff. Having a security guard gives you the peace of mind that any illegal or unauthorized activity is being monitored closely by one dedicated staff member.

Common duties of a security guard

The duties of security guards depend on the area they are employed to guard, but will generally include most of the following:

  • Patrol the premises to investigate signs of intrusion

  • Respond to security and fire alarms

  • Contact the relevant authorities in the case of an emergency

  • Screen people entering and exiting the premises (employees, contractors, customers etc.)

  • Authorise individuals to enter and exit secured areas

  • Apprehend trespassers, individuals who break company rules and/or criminals

  • Enforce parking permits and take care of parking issues

  • Write daily, weekly and/or monthly incident reports

Key skills for security guards

Some common skills to look for in security guards include:

  • Trustworthiness

  • People skills

  • Written and verbal communication skills

  • Knowledge of the law

  • Ability to stand and/or walk for long periods of time
