Weekly Hourly Hiring Report 10/27/20

Highlights

Overall jobs are up 3% week over week, down 9% month over month and up 21% since early March.

The uneven nature of the economic recovery continues. The labor market is headed in the right direction, with unemployment claims declining by more than 73,000 last week. And while retail sales beat year-ago levels for a fifth straight week, restaurant reservations declined slightly last week because of the cooler weather, putting recent gains in the restaurant industry at risk.

Meanwhile, Washington continues to discuss another large stimulus package, but after three months of negotiations, it’s highly unlikely there will be a bill before the election next week. No matter who wins, they’ll have their work cut out for them on the economy.

Some parts of the economy continue to move forward to pre-pandemic levels, even as a surge in COVID-19 cases threatens to slow down the fragile recovery. Almost half a million new cases were reported last week, the most since July, highlighting the need for a vaccine before a full economic recovery is possible.
