Weekly Hourly Hiring Report 11/17/20
Highlights
Overall jobs are up 4% week over week, up 19% month over month and up 27% since early March.
Jobs have shifted industries due to consumer behavior in the pandemic and businesses restricted by lockdowns. The US economy added 638,000 jobs last month as we slowly add back jobs lost at the start of the pandemic—but we certainly haven’t recovered the total jobs lost.
With more than a million new COVID-19 cases last week, we are squarely into a third wave. As states and localities start to issue restrictions to curb the spread, we’re seeing the recovery slow down, especially without the support of a second stimulus package.
There is some good news, though. New claims for unemployment were down by almost 50,000 last week. Plus, preliminary results for another effective vaccine were released this week, bolstering the long-term view as widespread distribution could take months.
