Weekly Hourly Hiring Report 3/2/21

Highlights

March is here, which means we’ve been in a global pandemic and publishing the Weekly Hourly Hiring Report for nearly one year. When we first published this report, we never expected to hit this milestone. But it does provide a new and compelling look at year-over-year trend data.  Overall  jobs are up 20% week over week, 34% month over month, and 43% year over year.

While most reports show a pandemic-era low unemployment rate of 6.3%, the labor market has a way to go to achieve pre-virus levels. More than 10 million Americans were unemployed as of January, compared with 5.7 million in February ‘20  before the pandemic took hold of the economy. This Friday’s monthly jobs report is forecast to show that 181,000 jobs were added in the U.S. last month.

The Biden administration expanded unemployment insurance eligibility late last  week to include workers who turned down job offers at unsafe workplaces, making good on a campaign promise to reduce pressure on people who have had to choose between their health and a paycheck. Hopefully this alleviates workers applying for jobs they’re not interested in and drives more intentional applicants.

As we approach the one year anniversary of the early impacts of COVID-19 on the economy, the job market and our personal lives, we want to acknowledge the strength, sacrifice and adaptability of hourly workers and employers throughout the pandemic. While it’s far from over, we’re optimistic about the continued signs of improvement and are grateful for your partnership.
