How COVID-19 is affecting hourly work

Weekly Hourly Hiring Report 8/17/21

Highlights

Overall jobs are up 77% compared to pre-pandemic norms, with 10% month over month growth and 78% year over year growth. Google searches for hourly jobs are down 3% year over year.

Vaccines and hourly work is a topic we’re following closely.

  • According to a Snagajob survey conducted this week of 1,872 hourly workers:

    • 33% said the Delta variant and the recent rise in COVID-19 cases has made them more hesitant to return to or go to work

    • 49% said how much they will be interacting with the public is a factor they consider when deciding to apply to a job or not

    • 67% would work for an employer that required them to be vaccinated and 93% are willing to work where they are required to wear a mask

  • The U.S. is expected to recommend a booster shot for COVID-19 vaccines 8 months after people received their second dose this week.

Consumers and businesses are reacting to the Delta variant.

  • U.S. retail sales fell in July by more than expected, reflecting a steady shift in spending toward services. This decline also suggests consumers may be growing more price-conscious as inflation continues to rise. The value of overall retail purchases dropped 1.1% last month.

  • In a survey of 1,000 American travelers, 33% have postponed travel because of the Delta variant compared to 25% two weeks prior.

Employers are still doing all they can to attract workers.

  • Last week, Target pledged to pay 100 percent of tuition and textbook costs for more than 340,000 employees by partnering with Guild Education to give employees the ability to choose from 250 programs at more than 40 U.S. schools and universities.

  • CVS announced last week that, in addition to increasing hourly wages, they are dropping education restrictions that previously kept some people from getting a job at its stores. The chain no longer requires a high school diploma or GED for most entry-level roles, and this year plans to end its GPA requirement when recruiting at universities.
