What’s the Difference Between Entry Level vs. Associate Level?

What’s in a job title? Quite a bit, actually. But it all depends on the type of job as well as the company and industry. This article touches on all aspects of an entry-level job versus an associate-level job.

What is Entry Level?

Entry-level is typically a person’s first full-time job. This can be after high school, after completing technical training, or perhaps after graduating from college. It could also be a person’s first job in a new or closely related industry even though they’ve been employed previously.

The words “entry-level” clearly communicate that the job is at the very bottom rung of the career ladder.

What is Associate Level?

Associate-level usually designates a position that requires two or three years of experience. This level of work often follows an entry-level role in a typical career progression.

While the words “entry-level” are pretty clear, regardless of the company or industry, that’s definitely not the case with the term “associate-level.” The meaning and use of the title can often be subtle or, just as likely, ubiquitous throughout an organization or industry. Let’s dig deeper.

Associate Position Job Description and Qualifications

Closely examining postings on job search websites such as LinkedIn for the required qualifications is an excellent starting point to determine the distinction between entry-level and associate-level. The posting and supporting job description will provide insight into what recruiters are looking for at the entry-level or associate level. And while that is important for completing a job application, it can also provide insight into preparing your career path for mid-level and even higher-level positions as you learn what’s needed for that next job.

In the job posting and related job description, look at project responsibilities, leadership assignments, decision making, and client interactions. Entry-level positions will seldom have leadership responsibilities. And working directly with clients is not expected in industries outside of retail or food service.

What does Associate-Level Mean Across Different Industries and Companies

Note that different industries have different job titles. In engineering, an associate engineer may have a precise meaning. Yet, in retail, banking or finance businesses, everyone may be called an associate who isn’t a manager, director, or vice president. In those industries, you’ll also find associate managers and associate vice presidents.

For example, an associate engineer may be required to have a bachelor’s degree, one- or two-years work experience, and hold appropriate certifications in their specialization. An entry-level engineer may be a recent college graduate with some work experience from a summer internship.

In accounting, an associate-level accountant will be expected to have one or more years of direct experience in bookkeeping tasks such as recording financial transactions, balancing bank statements, issuing and paying invoices, and more. Entry-level will require training but much less practical experience if any. However, experience even in a part-time position in accounting can help you land an entry-level job.

In both engineering and accounting occupations, there are many follow-on certifications and advanced degrees that will be required for higher-level positions. That includes master’s degrees, Certified Public Accountant, and others that designate the individual is qualified for senior-level positions. That could include senior associate engineers or accountants.

In general, the use of the title associate-level varies by industry and how the company leadership and human resources department prefers to set up the job titles and pay grade structure. That’s why it’s so important to review those LinkedIn and other job posting sites closely to see what they require and how you meet those requirements.

What is an Associate Degree?

Before we leave this topic, let’s discuss another use of the term associate in the job market — associate degrees. Associate degree programs are two- or three-year courses of study offered by technical and community colleges that provide a solid foundation in applied sciences, technical fields, or business studies. They are a great way to prepare for a well-paying job in your chosen career field.

Depending on the program of study, they can provide the entry-level skill set you need for that first job. Or they can form the foundation for further study toward a bachelor’s degree in the same or similar field. You will probably see associate degrees listed in the job postings or job requirements for entry-level and associate-level jobs.

Entry-Level vs. Associate-Level Wrap Up

As you can tell from the discussion above, entry-level is just that — a job at the very start of a career in most companies and industries. On the other hand, an associate job is quite a bit more nuanced. It might be the next level up from entry-level. Or it could be the title that nearly everyone has in a company or industry.

That means that whether the job posting says entry-level, associate-level, or even senior associate, dig deeper into the required training and job experience levels. This is necessary since every industry and organization has its own way of describing positions and creating job titles. And that is particularly true when it comes to associate-level jobs.
