Job Summary

The Network Costing Specialist fulfills data requests and maintains data utilized for standard and specialized requests. He/She writes data request instructions in the Structured Query Language (SQL) servers to support and maintain databases and web applications. This position summarizes and queries data for UPS department requestors. He/She monitors web applications and processes and notifies users of system disruptions and scheduled delays.

The Network Costing Specialist will run and debug prewritten SQL processes to keep applications up to date.  He/She is responsible for writing simple queries and reports in SQL to aid data requests from management. This position is expected to work independently with minimal guidance to produce in a rapid area development (RAD).  He/She will work with multiple groups on projects and deadlines to meet the needs of our customer.  This position also balances multiple projects and deployment schedules to meet stakeholder goals.   

Other Duties

  • Reviews data requests to correctly identify and understand the information needed.
  • Verifies data output to spot inconsistencies and errors.
  • Uses knowledge of database applications, tools, infrastructure and standards to develop and support databases.
  • Develops a data retrieval plan (e.g., how the query is completed, fastest way to retrieve data, etc.) to pull the data efficiently from mainframe data sources.
  • Manipulates and combines data accurately to answer business requests.

  • Applies information systems knowledge: Demonstrates an understanding of the basic need for technical support in a business; demonstrates awareness of the primary uses of technology by business representatives, demonstrates a basic understanding of the systems of the enterprise.
  • Applies System tools and utilities knowledge: Demonstrates understanding of the tools and utilities used within UPS, as well as the various types of system tools and utilities available on the market; demonstrates understanding of the role these tools and utilities play in optimizing system development, accessibility, administration, and management.
  • Detail orientation: Captures/documents specific and accurate information; learns subjects thoroughly and in detail; completes work with thoroughness; supplies appropriate details when requested; maintains organized files.
  • Quality assurance knowledge: Communicates quality assurance methodology and explains desired outcomes of testing; identifies the steps in the project life cycle.

Minimum Qualifiers  

  • A Bachelor's degree in Business (Finance or Accounting), Computer Science, or Industrial Engineering - Preferred
  • Experience using SQL (i.e., writing data instructions and debugging pre-written requests) - Preferred
  • Experience demonstrating a basic knowledge of database design principles - Preferred
