The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum is a federally chartered, nonpartisan institution that was created by the US Congress to serve as America's national memorial to the victims of the Holocaust and an educational institution dedicated to the history and lessons of the Holocaust. The Museum seeks to educate Americans from all 50 states and all walks of life as well as international audiences. The Museum has three areas of expertise: Holocaust remembrance, Holocaust scholarship and education, and genocide prevention.

Information about the role

Since its opening in 1993, USHMM, America's national Holocaust memorial and federal educational institution, has aimed to inspire citizens and leaders worldwide to confront hatred, and promote human dignity. The Museum's centerpiece is its Permanent Exhibition ("PE"), which over the course of its three floors immerses its visitors in this important history.

The Museum understands the need to maintain and build on this exhibition's success, while adapting to changing audiences, updated historiography, its new educational approach, and evolving museum design techniques, by embarking on a revitalization of the Permanent Exhibition.

The primary purpose of this position is to serve as Exhibition Coordinator for the Permanent Exhibition Revitalization Project (PE-R). The Exhibition Coordinator will provide technical curatorial assistance for planning and implementing the PE-R and for related programmatic, educational, and promotional materials.

This is a full-time donated position (non-Federal) paid with the Museum's private funds. Salary is commensurate with experience.

Duties, and Responsibilities for the role

  • Serves as primary content and information coordinator for the PE-R.
  • Facilitates project team tasks, including but not limited to, tracking and communicating status of content and information workstreams, coordinating project-related activities, and relaying issues that may require project adjustments.
  • Creates and maintains content databases used to track curatorial and design development working collaboratively with colleagues in other Museum offices.
  • Ensures that records and research for exhibition components are authentic and validated for historical content, provenance, and credit acknowledgements.
  • Collaborates with the Museum's Legal Office and lenders to coordinate copyright and use-rights clearances.
  • Develops relevant paper and electronic/digital documentation including subject files, exhibition materials, publications, historical research, and graphics.
  • Prepares briefing papers, summaries, narratives and other documentation.
  • Performs supplemental research and writes research documentation.
  • Facilitates the use of material from both the USHMM Collection and in contacting, negotiating, obtaining, or borrowing materials from other institutions, organizations, or individuals worldwide.
  • Relays developments on exhibition content and design as necessary for the assessment, treatment, and preparation of artifacts for display to the Collections and Conservation staff.
  • Provides information relevant to artifacts, such as precise measurements, general condition, and display requirements.
  • Participates in curatorial artifact reviews, artifact photography, and installation of objects.
  • Generates correspondence in support of the exhibition and loan process.
  • Compiles, organizes and disseminates data and historical information.
  • Develops documentation materials used during technical design or fabrication phases and maintains design and production specifications and file with tracking punchlist requirements.
  • Reviews design documentation and script materials and helps coordinate recorded responses to these elements.
  • Coordinates and collaborates with both internal staff and external institutions and individuals to collect materials for exhibitions.
  • Determines appropriate methods and techniques for research.
  • Participates in content development, and organizes and maintains both electronic and hardcopy records of research and materials for the PE-R and related educational and promotional materials.
  • Tracks and organizes all project content and decisions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications for the role

  • 3+ years working with exhibition development and coordination, historical research and content development, programmatic administration, or similarly applicable field of experience.
  • Proven project management abilities.
  • Ability to interact, negotiate and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues at all levels.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Familiarity with project management software and advanced knowledge and skills with Microsoft Office or Google Suite.
  • Ability to work effectively with remote teams, and spend 25% to 50% of time on site for meetings, staff briefings, tours, collections assessments and similar.
  • Occasional international travel might be required.

Preferred Qualifications for the role

  • Working knowledge of Holocaust history and/or twentieth-century European history preferred.
  • Experience with collection management systems including AirTable, and project management systems.
