What you'll do...

Walmart's Indirect Tax Team plays a critical role in the company's financial operations, focusing on audit, compliance, and operational aspects of sales and use tax. As a Fortune 1 market leader, Walmart is committed to transforming its end-to-end tax calculation system and processes, embarking on a multi-year journey to centralize and modernize its tax engine and compliance reporting. The team is responsible for ensuring the accuracy of transaction taxes charged to customers and members across Walmart and Sam's Club domestic operations. With responsibility for reporting and remitting transactional taxes across thousands of jurisdictions, the Indirect Tax Team also provides valuable insights to key tax policy stakeholders.

Join Walmart's dynamic Sales Tax Operations Team as a Director, Indirect Sales Tax. Be at the forefront of a multi-year transformation journey to centralize and modernize our end-to-end tax calculation systems and processes. You will lead a team that proactively advises on the taxability of new business initiatives, the sales tax implications of M&A transactions, and the defense of taxability decisions. This role entails working directly with our stakeholders, tax authorities, and cross-functional teams within Walmart to implement tax strategies and resolve tax-related issues. As a Director on the Sales Tax Operations Team, you will...
  • Collaborate with the business to advise on the sales tax treatment of new lines of revenue.
  • Work with our data and technology teams to establish and execute on their short- and long-term roadmaps.
  • Collaborate with government affairs to advise on the implications of new legislation.
  • Maintain internal controls over sales tax calculation.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to the current workflows of the team.
  • Establish and enforce KPI's to measure team effectiveness and business responsiveness.
  • Conduct tax research and provide technical advice on multi-state issues around sales tax.
  • Lead, coach and develop team, supporting their growth.


You'll sweep us off our feet if you have...
  • 8+ years of Sales Tax Experience
  • MBA, master's in accounting, or law degree
  • 5+ years in a leadership position
  • Proven experience with end-to-end technology at a large retailer and tax software engines
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience in creating and executing standard operating procedures for Sales Tax Operations in a cross-functional environment
  • Proven experience advising on the sale and use tax implication of M&A transactions
  • Familiarity with SAP or similar ERP Systems
  • Experience reviewing sales tax language in proposed legislation and interacting with Government Relations of Department of Revenue officials
