Summer is a great time to find work, but many roles tend to be seasonal or temporary. While that works for some people, you may be looking for a longer-term position. The good news is, taking a summer job is a great way to get a foot in the door. 

So how can you turn that summer opportunity into a lasting job? 

Here are 5 tips to turn your temp gig into a permanent position. 

1. Make a great first impression

Starting with your interview and every day on the job, make sure you show up and are eager to work and learn. If you view the seasonal role as an extended interview or trial run and make that extra effort, your manager will be sure to take notice. 

2. Act like you’re here to stay

One way to turn your job into a permanent role is to act like you will be there for years. Don’t approach it with a “short-timer” mentality, but instead, think of it as the job you’ll have for a while. 

One simple strategy is to introduce yourself to every staff member, even if they are not on your team or in your department. For instance, if you are hired as a hostess as additional support for summer months, you won’t have a lot of direct interaction with the kitchen staff or bartenders. But if you want to stay on long-term, introduce yourself to everyone, including the kitchen manager, head chef, bar manager and other leaders. Get to know the part-time busboy, the new waitress and the line cooks. Becoming an integral part of the team will show managers you’d be an asset. 

3. Make your interest known

Managers and business owners can’t read our minds (which is probably a good thing at times!), so even if you are thinking like a long-term employee, you eventually have to turn those thoughts into action. Tell the hiring manager you’re interested in staying on longer and ask how you can make that happen. The more your managers know about your goals, the easier it is for them to help you achieve them. 

4. Go above and beyond

To turn this temporary summer gig into an ongoing job, exceeding the basic expectations of your role will go a long way. 

Taking on other responsibilities shows you’re a team player with versatile skills. Helping coworkers, stocking empty shelves and cleaning are all things that can show your manager you’re going the extra mile. 

5. Don’t broadcast another job search

Even if you want to turn your temporary gig into something permanent, it makes sense to keep an eye out for other jobs until you’re certain that can and will happen. We won’t tell you to stop looking for work, but we recommend you don’t broadcast your search to coworkers. You don’t have to lie to your current employer, but it’s a good idea to keep an active job search to yourself.
