Weekly Hourly Hiring Report 1/12/21
Highlights
Following one of the most tense and heartbreaking weeks in our nation’s history, overall jobs are up 3% week over week, up 6% month over month and up 8% since early March. However, Google searches for part-time jobs are down 12% month over month.
In last week’s Labor Department jobs report, we saw that the U.S. economy lost a net 140,000 jobs in December, the first month since April that total payrolls declined. Despite these high unemployment levels, employers are having a hard time hiring enough workers. One of the most counterintuitive effects of COVID-19 is the extremely tight labor market.
Important adjustments are being made to the distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine. Adults over age 65, and those of any age with pre-existing conditions, will have access to the vaccine within the week. States are also opening distribution up to essential workers, expanding the number of vaccination distribution sites to more accessible locations, and doses are getting out the door faster. There is a bi-partisan consensus that the best way forward is to move from risk-based prioritization to vaccinating as many adults as possible, as soon as possible.
It’s been a hard week—a week most of us will never forget. Now more than ever, we must remember that what unites us is greater than what divides us and that our shared values and democracy are what make this country so great. We must come together in the coming months and jointly tackle the challenges we still face including a global pandemic, recession, and racial injustice.
