Weekly Hourly Hiring Report 1/5/21
Highlights
Overall, jobs are up 12% week over week, down 1% month over month, and up 5% since early March.
In the wake of holiday gatherings, the nation is seeing a surge in COVID-19 cases. State and local governments are responding with a wide range of regulations to balance slowing the spread and the negative impact on the economy. As a result, the job market varies considerably by location.
The next 48 hours will be very telling for 2020 election results. With all eyes on Georgia as twin runoff elections determine control of the U.S. Senate, the results will be a significant factor in the hourly job market outlook in 2021 and beyond.
As part of the stimulus package passed by Congress in late December, eligible Americans started to receive the second $600 stimulus payment, and select states began paying out the extra $300 per week in federal unemployment aid (a benefit available for jobless workers through mid-March).
The agreement also included $68 billion for the purchase and distribution of COVID-19 vaccines and testing, $20 billion of which will make the vaccine available at no cost for anyone needing it. With this continued vaccine distribution, comes a glimmer of hope for a return to normalcy.
