Weekly Hourly Hiring Report 2/23/21

Highlights

Overall jobs are up 11% week over week, up 35% month over month and up 23% since early March.

The economy is improving. One particularly bright spot, retail sales are expected to grow by 8.1 percent this year. States are loosening restrictions, and Democrats in Congress are fast-tracking the passage of the $1.9 trillion relief package, set for a virtual House vote later this week.

However, the number of workers seeking unemployment benefits unexpectedly rose to 861,000 last week. This latest batch of first time jobless claims brought the pandemic total to 78.9 million—that’s just under the total population of Germany today.

New COVID-19 cases and deaths continue to decline and Pfizer and Moderna have pledged to make a combined total of 220 million vaccine doses available for shipment by the end of March. This is welcome news after yesterday, when the US mourned the loss of 500,000 lives lost to COVID-19.
