Weekly Hourly Hiring Report 3/15/21
Highlights
Overall jobs are up 103% year over year and 35% month over month. And Google searches for part-time jobs are down 8% year over year—as expected given stimulus checks are in the mail.
Pent-up consumer demand is predicted to surge into the economy late this spring, signaling the early days of a post-pandemic reality. We’re already seeing positive signs of a stronger than expected job market recovery with jobless claims dropping by 42,000 last week. As cases continue to drop and the vaccine keeps rolling out at 2M+ vaccinations a day, it’s time to start planning for summer hiring.
In fact, 88% of businesses who traditionally hire for the summer plan to do so this year.
Yet due to the uncertainty regarding the pace of "reopening," we expect summer hiring to be delayed 1-2 months versus normal years past, with volume hiring likely concentrated in May and June vs April and May.
In particular, we expect strong growth in restaurant jobs where there is significant consumer demand. Hospitality will be mixed based on the expectation that business travel will take longer to return to pre-pandemic levels, but data trends are moving in the right direction for the airlines and airport vendors. Ahead of an expected surge in summer travel, TSA is hiring 6,000 new security officers around the country.
