How COVID-19 is affecting hourly work

Weekly Hourly Hiring Report 3/23/21

Overall jobs are up 37% month over month and up 126% year over year.

We are increasingly hopeful that the new normal is close. The pace of vaccinations has increased; one-third of adults (~80M) have now received at least one dose. More and more states are moving to reopen their economies and loosening restrictions.

California said it intends to reopen its theme parks, outdoor stadiums and ballparks beginning April 1, though at reduced capacity. Disney CEO Bob Chapek said that the company will need time to bring back and train furloughed employees, aiming to reopen Disneyland in late April.

But the labor market remains incredibly tight as new unemployment claims stay stubbornly high, with 770k this week compared to the “normal” 200k.  It’s a reminder that the recovery will be bumpy and getting jobs filled could be a challenge short term. Brands like WaWa, Busch Gardens and Water Country USA have incentivized workers with starting bonuses.

In the latest Snagajob survey of hourly job seekers, we confirmed that 65% are looking for work in the next 30 days. To make sure your job postings get noticed, here are the top 3 things people look for in a job description when deciding to apply.

  • Pay (71%)

  • Responsibilities (55%)

  • Location (52%)
