Weekly Hourly Hiring Report 5/26/2020

Highlights

Jobs are slowly and steadily coming back. Hourly jobs were hit the hardest in April, down 53% at their lowest point. There’s a light at the end of the tunnel—jobs are still down 34% from pre-pandemic levels, but they’re beginning to come back, up 16% in May.

The overall low for jobs during COVID-19 was in April, and they’re rebounding from there. Here’s where we’re seeing the jobs come back:

Full service restaurant (FSR) jobs, which were the hardest hit, are up 10% in May, though still down 59% overall. 23% of workers are looking for jobs in full service restaurants. 

On-demand jobs are up 12% in May. They’re still down 59% overall, but opportunities are slowly reemerging.

Convenience store jobs are up 3% in May, down 27% overall. 21% of workers are looking for convenience store jobs. 

Grocery and healthcare job opportunities continue to grow.

Grocery jobs are up 39% overall. 36% of workers are interested in grocery jobs.

Healthcare jobs are up 5% overall. 23% of workers are looking for healthcare jobs. 

What’s happening across America

All state data is from 3/2/20-5/26/20

In Daytona Beach, FL, retail jobs are almost back to pre-pandemic levels, only down 4% overall.

In Durham, NC, grocery jobs continue to grow, up 207%. Warehousing jobs are also still growing, up 50%.

In New York, NY, there are lots of jobs in grocery and warehousing, up 260% and 137% respectively.

In Austin, TX, healthcare jobs opportunities are emerging, up 32% over pre-coronavirus norms.  

In Fresno, CA, warehousing jobs are up 100% and healthcare jobs are starting to grow, up 13% overall.

Workers

48% of workers are feeling hopeful. Job searches on Google still haven’t returned to their pre-pandemic levels, but there are signs of increasing worker interest. Part-time job searches are up 10% in May, down 50% overall.

The bottom line

Hourly jobs are on the rebound, slowly but surely. While the numbers are still down from the beginning of March, they’ve been steadily climbing back up as states reopened in May.
