Weekly Hourly Hiring Report 7/6/21
Highlights
Overall jobs are up 66% compared to pre-pandemic norms, seeing 4% month over month growth and 100% year over year growth. Google searches for hourly jobs are down 7% year over year.
The labor shortage remains a hot and complicated topic—in fact, the term “labor shortage” was searched more in May 2021 than during any other month in Google’s history. Here are the contributing factors:
The June Jobs Report, released right before the holiday weekend, noted that employers added 850,000 jobs last month. That’s the biggest total jobs increase in the past 10 months, and it exceeded expert predictions by 22%.
While the increase in jobs was the strongest since last August, and more Americans are rejoining the labor force, the total number of adults working or looking for work was flat in June (61.6%)—1.7 percentage points below its pre-pandemic level.
The leisure and hospitality industry is experiencing rapid growth—nearly 1 in 4 jobs created last month were in restaurants and bars. However, leisure and hospitality jobs are still down 12.9% from pre-pandemic norms.
Workers’ wages have risen substantially, up 3.6% overall year over year, with hospitality workers making 7.9% more in June than they were pre-pandemic.
Experts say that in order for the job market to fully recover, the increased wage trend must continue.
